After reading the reviews and seeing their impressive menu full of yummy Hungarian dishes we had high expectations, but they were unfortunately underachieved.
What was great is the ambiance (very cute place with folk vibes and nice views over the Danube) and the kindness of the waiters. All of them were very welcoming, flexible and nice.
But the main show element, the food, was well below average. We tried a lot of different dishes, and except for one soup most of them were so disappointing that I’m puzzled by people praising the taste (I have to think some of them haven’t really tried great Hungarian food yet). The meat in the vadas was overly salty and too full of spices, whilst its side dish, the nokedli, saw zero salt. The noodles in the harcsapaprikás felt like they came out of the cheapest Spar packet and they were also cold. The Gundel pancake wasn’t fresh and felt very cheap. The fries, which aren’t hard to make, were basically inedible. The rest was average.
The portions were mostly all right, and the prices would be somewhat ok too, if they were serving quality food, but for this subpar value it was definitely expensive. The service was slow and not very attentive (we asked them to bring the fries together with the soup, but whilst the soup arrrived after a few minutes, we had to wait 40 mins for the fries, as they arrived last). Won’t be...
Read moreGreat Hungarian food slightly off service but nevertheless I recommend to visit if you are in the vicinity! The food is authentic and delicious nothing bad can be said about it. The lost star is for the "rule" of they are not accepting booking but when we went there they said the first opening tables will go for 5 booked table... when we dared to ask about it, we got a bit of a look of mind your business and their rule is you can book from 4pm... not worth arguing about it and the rest of the experience was great. The restaurant and toilet is easily accessible; although I think there is one step into the building but possibly doable by wheelchair and help. There is a great size of terrace looking to the River Danube, some tables cannot avoid direct sun so summer time it can be uncomfortable but the majority of the seats are in shades under the roof in open space. I look forward to try some more dishes...
Read moreI have been here many times and the food was good, although simple and costly. The ambience is is soothing by the Danube. Therefore the two stars.
However, last time we tried to eat there, they turned as away even though we arrived shortly before 9 o'clock (their website says that they take orders until 21:00 and close around 22:00). The restaurant was fairly well visited at this time, so it's not like we would have been some of the only guests. I also tried calling them around 20:15 to place orders, but they didn't pick up.
It's understandable that they can't keep the kitchen open until very late, but at least they should abide by their own website. The guy we asked was also very rude, dismissive and extremely unhelpful, despite us having clearly travelled quite a long while to get there.
It's really a shame, because this was a restaurant close to my heart, but I am left disillusioned by...
