Without a doubt or any exaggeration whatsoever, I can attest that this place serves the best fish and chips I have ever eaten, and one of the best you will ever eat.
Located just a couple of minutes away from Skógafoss, this little red food truck is the definition of unassuming. The sign out front is labeled 'Local Fish and Chips', and it is truth in advertising - right at the side of the window is a description of how all their fish consists of whatever the local fishermen caught that day (usually Atlantic Cod). There is only one item on the menu, that being the fish & chips, which will run you 2000 krona (approx $18.50 USD), with just the chips available on request. Extra sauce is available for 200 ($1.85), and as far as sauces go, you have a choice of sweet chili, ketchup, or icelandic tartar sauce.
But let's face it, you're here for the real deal - how do the fish & chips taste?
Like a crispy slice of heaven, that's how.
There are two things that must be accounted for when cooking fish and chips - the freshness of the fish, and the thickness and crispiness of the batter. If your fish is not fresh, it will taste, well, fishy, and not pleasant at all. If your batter is too thick, you will have either overcooked fish or gooey batter; too thin, and you lack the crunch necessary for a good bite. I can honestly attest I have not tasted fresher cod in my life - it was flakey, it was clean-tasting, it was everything deep-fried fish should be. The beer batter had an immensely satisfying crunch without being heavy in the slightest. Oh, and the chips - do not get me started on the chips! There is nothing I hate more than an undercooked chip; it's like all the worst parts of mashed potatoes. These were golden brown perfection, and go excellently with the tartar sauce.
All in all, this little truck is a very humble operation, but great things can come from humble circumstances. If you are ever vacationing in the south of Iceland, make sure that you give this place a visit. You...

Read moreThroughout my entire week in Iceland eating at various restaurants, this quaint little food truck has got to be my favourite. Back home, I have tried many fish and chips places. When I ate here, however, it was a game changer. The fish itself breaks apart easily and melts in your mouth - indicative of its freshness. The beer batter used is homemade with their own beer and the fry on it was thin and yet quite crispy. Potato wedges accompanying it were seasoned and fried to a similar perfection as the fish. You cannot choose the fish you want as it is whatever is freshly caught by the owner but there are 3 selections of sauces which were delicious. I recommend the Icelandic tartar. The price is reasonable within Icelandic standards and the wait for the food was a bit long due to a somewhat long lineup. Still, after hiking in Skogafoss, this place was so rewarding and even well after the trip I still fondly remember and crave their food. HIGHLY recommend, this is the BEST fish and chips I've had in my life - and that's not something I say lightly...
