What was supposed to be a joyful visit to Iceland turned into a nightmarish moment, possibly tainted by racial discrimination. On our way to a glacier tour in the southeast, we stopped at a gas station to fill up. Since it was our first time in Iceland, my friends and I had some questions about refueling and went inside the store. Generally, convenience stores attached to gas stations manage the station, so I naturally assumed that the gas station and the restaurant were under the same management. After waiting for an employee at the counter to finish with another customer, I approached to ask my question. It was a simple inquiry, and since we were in plain sight, I didn't think it necessary to approach the register area. However, the employee sarcastically told me to come forward if I had a question. Assuming they might just be having a bad day, I approached for a face-to-face conversation. As soon as I mentioned my question about "N1," the employee pointed to their uniform's company logo and retorted, "I work here, I don't know about the gas station. Does this restaurant look related to you?" They treated me as if I was foolish for even asking. I realized then that they had crossed a line. I asked why they were speaking to me in such an angry manner, and they just repeated themselves. There were people dining around us, so I didn't want to prolong the conversation. Although I didn't want to think this way, I couldn't help but wonder if their behavior was because I'm Asian. Nonetheless, I think it's too hasty to label it as racial discrimination based solely on their actions, and I'm trying not to think that way. Coming from Canada, where English is spoken, I was able to address this situation in English, but I wonder how someone from a region where English isn't widely spoken would have coped in the same situation. As we were leaving, another employee blocked our way out, seemingly trying to ease the tension (it seemed like they were trying to lighten the mood), and I realized they were just a colleague of the rude employee, not the manager. We just said we were fine and left the store. Arriving in Iceland, I was initially enchanted by the beautiful landscapes and friendly people, but this incident was a disappointment.

Today, due to road closures caused by snow, we took a rest here. The owner warmly welcomed us, and luckily, we get the last serving of fish and chips. The mushroom soup was delicious, and in the cold weather, freshly made hot meals were truly delightful. Even the kids enjoyed it. The restaurant is clean, and the owner ensures proper disinfection of tables. Free restroom facilities are provided, and there's a variety of groceries and beverages available. The chef has much passion for his food.

I went and got the fish burger meal. For a gas station fish burger it was good but the fries that came with the burger were stale and lacked flavour. Service was excellent. Employees smiled throughout my entire order and seemed to all and all like their work The atmosphere wasn’t all that good. The people were fine but the decor always never seemed that great. Skaftárskáli was good all and all and receives a 4/5 rating from me.

Today I walked into this grill and placed and order for a cheeseburger without onion and paprika witch it usually comes with. I asked the employee to please prepare my burger medium well done. The employee wrote on the order MEDIUM. I corrected him to please make it MADIUM WELL done and he responded to me with “don’t expect to much this is a gas station”

I of course told him to cancel my order. I don’t see myself going there again anytime soon unless they rethink there staff selections in the...
