Tambuli Mane – A Watery Letdown
I recently visited Tambuli Mane – Ajji Helkottidu, drawn in by its nostalgic tagline and expecting a burst of traditional, flavour-rich dishes. Unfortunately, my expectations were washed away , quite literally , by what turned out to be a watery and underwhelming experience.
The Signature Dish Disappointment Tambuli, their so-called signature dish, was shockingly bland. It felt like I was served water with a name tag .. no taste, no flavour, just a memory of what it should’ve been. There was nothing unique or memorable about it. If this was meant to represent Ajji’s recipe, then I truly believe the soul of the dish has been lost somewhere between tradition and execution.
To make matters worse, the food was not even served hot. Even when we requested to have certain items heated, it took 30 to 40 minutes — only for them to return in mere ounces. Kashaya and other so-called "heritage" drinks were served so little, more like tasters than actual servings.
The servers had no clue about the dishes being served. And honestly, even if they told us the names, the flavours wouldn’t help us remember them — because there were none.
Thali That Misses the Mark When you label something as a Baale Yele Oota, the least you expect is a wholesome spread — maybe 2 chapatis or pooris, something to add bite and satisfaction. But here? Just rice and a bunch of odourless, tasteless tambulis. For the price charged, it felt like a raw deal.
Neeru Dosa Mix – A Disaster at Home To top it all, I also bought their neeru dosa mix, hoping to recreate something nice at home. Big mistake. It turned out to be a disastrous experiment... no flavour, no texture, no value for money.
A Humble Invitation to Tambuli Mane Team I genuinely welcome the Tambuli Mane team to visit my home. I’d love to serve them tambuli made the way our grandmothers truly prepared it — full of flavour, depth, and tastee. Maybe then, they’ll remember what their tagline is supposed...

Though not planned, unexpectedly we happened to visit Tambuli Mane Banashankari outlet today.
It was never been a wrong decision to enter into this place by seeing the board. The ambiance was so cool. Myself, my wife and daughter ordered Tambuli of different flavours ( Vayu Vidanga, Majjige hullu, Sorale kudi) and tasted all of them. The taste was amazing. The staff informed me that it was prepared with thick butter milk which is high probiotic. As I have gastric issue, I chose Vayu Vidanga tambuli. I was surprised to see the relaxation in stomach in very short time.
We had full meal which included pickle, kosumari, palya, Medemuglu rice with Tambuli, sambar and curd combination and a Payasa served on banana leaf. The tambuli and rice combination was amazing. The hospitality made us eat more than regular but still we were feeling light as none of the items were heavy in content. All the items were very hygienic and it was really a pleasure to have such an authentic Malnad food.
After lunch, we were also offered "Kavala" which is nothing but Tambula, a combination of betel leaf + arecanut + calcium which is a high digester. So everything offered here are just Healthy, Hygienic and delicious!!!
The outlet also sells pure and high quality coconut oil, groundnut oil, pepper, clove, cardamom, honey, health drink concentrates like nannari, Amla, jamun fruit, bramhi..etc. We bought few of these and the quality was unbelievable.
It's really a worth place to visit and have healthy and hygienic food. Kudos to the Tambuli Mane team for bringing Malnad delicacy...
Read moreI had my lunch at Tambuli Mane yesterday, and honestly, I was blown away! The entire experience from the Salt to the final kashaya (ಕಶಾಯ) and ele adike (ಎಲೆ ಅಡಿಕೆ), felt like a soulful journey back to my Malenadu roots.
The attention to detail is simply amazing! Every item served is thoughtfully curated — not just tasty, but super health-conscious too.
They serve on banana leaves, which instantly adds a homely and traditional vibe.
Some highlights that truly impressed me:
Pink salt, homemade pickles, and a spoonful of tamarind chutney (ಹುಣಸೆಹಣ್ಣು ಚಟ್ನಿ) – that tiny chutney was bursting with flavour!
Medium-polished village rice – it beautifully absorbs sambar and elevates the whole meal
Two types of palya (ಪಲ್ಯ), kosambari (ಕೋಸಂಬರಿ), and rice with 3 types of Tambuli (ತಂಬುಳಿ) – full marks for taste!
Sambar (ಸಾಂಬಾರ್), Rasam , and the surprise star – curd made after churning butter (ಮಜ್ಜಿಗೆ) – just like we have at home
The meal ends with menthya kashaya (ಮೆಂತ್ಯ ಕಶಾಯ) and ele adike (ಉರಿನ ಎಲೆ + ಅಡಿಕೆ) – a perfect, traditional finish
Honestly, my all-time favourite veg meals used to be Nandhana Palace. But Tambuli Mane has now taken the crown!
If you want to enjoy a healthy, authentic, and heartwarming meal, you must visit this place.
Wishing the founders all the success – what a beautiful thought...
