Domino's Pizza has been told its website and app must be made fully accessible to blind people, after losing a legal case in the US.
It follows a complaint from a blind customer who said he first struggled to change toppings and then was unable to complete a pizza's purchase using the company's iPhone app.
The plaintiff's case was initially dismissed in 2017 but was successful on appeal.
It may now set a precedent for others.
Guillermo Robles began his legal action against the restaurant chain in 2016.
He highlighted that Apple's smartphones featured built-in screen-reading software to help their visually impaired owners use the internet.
However, the software relies on images and other visual elements within a website or app being tagged with text.
In Domino's case, Mr Robles said both the company's app and website lacked the labelling required for him to use its Pizza Builder facility or to complete an order.
In addition, he said, he was unable to make use of discount vouchers.
This, he argued, put the company in breach of the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990, which says it is unlawful for businesses to deny individuals with disabilities access to their goods and services unless the effort involved places them under an "undue burden".
In 2017, a Pasadena federal court judge dismissed Mr Robles's claim on the grounds that the government had yet to issue regulations about what apps and websites had to do to be compliant with the law.
But a three-judge appeals panel reversed that decision on Monday , saying that the lack of specific rules did not mean that the food chain escaped its responsibility to provide "full and equal enjoyment" of its services to blind people.
In doing so, the judges sent the case back to the district court, which must now issue a fresh ruling based solely on whether the app adequately communicates its functions to...
Read moreI have been to Domino's pizza, Muzaffapur consecutively for two days...on the first day I was more than pleased with the service even I got the replacement for the pizza which wasn't not prepared properly.
Second day everything was fine and I got the most amazing taste of newly introduced world pizzas but I was starving so I decided to order a zingy parcel and a burger pizza after finishing my first order. The order arrived right on time....but the burger pizza was not baked properly and the smell was of burn coming out of the little box in which they serve.... I went straight to the manager and asked him for replacement and he agreed but when I recieved it again...it was more burnt than before...I was unable to ask for another replacement as they told me this is the way it is baked or cooked. I have been to Domino's pizza across the country but I never got such bad experience with burger pizzas and what they told me is definitely not the way burger pizzas are baked.
So I'll suggest Domino's to make better policies for their customers. I was always a happy customer but this was my bad experience at Domino's...
Read moreNo doubt dominos pizzas tastes good, however i had bad experience in getting the delivery. I had ordered few pizzas of less than 3k. Due to bank transactions failing twice I had selected cash option. Order went fine, a confirmation message (aka OTP) came to phone. We had confirmed the order and got the confirmation email. After few minutes a gentleman from dominoâs called to understand the address and started insisting for making payment. In the middle of kidâs birthday party I tried hard explaining that it is getting late for food and we are happy to pay on delivery with no success. I was told that either I need to pay by paytm or other digital method or come to the shop to make payments.
I had no other options but to leave the party half ways and go to shop, make the payments and bring the pizzas.
Staffs were courteous and kind, they had pizzas ready for pickup but I lost my 30-40 minutes for this. Dominoâs should make it clear on their website that they DO NOT TRUST customers for the cash delivery to avoid these type of incidents. I would think twice about ordering from dominoâs. Particularly in...
