On a hot summer evening I was finishing up some errands at shanmugam road, kochi. I get a call from the lady of the house ordering a 'nice puttu and something nice to go with it'. 'Nice' and 'something' is always ominous. Puttu being a local staple, Google threw endless results making it more complicated. Georgeettan's puttu kada felt reasonable as it was about 5kms from Marine drive and that route would help me beat the city traffic. An evening ride past prestige apartments and vuduthala was enjoyable with sea breeze coming in. I reached the small lane off a busy main road following the map but couldn't find the shop and had to enquire at a watch shop near by. Front portion of Georgeettan's house (I presumed) has been converted to a small restaurant. It was around 6 PM and a handful of tired men returning from work could be seen ordering puttu and botty curry - been there, done that - so I knew this must be something interesting. I asked for puttu and stew to go. Georgeettan off loaded the big vessel of stew from the stove and opend it - wow - flavour of my mom's stew kindling my school day memories! No masala, no fancy stuff! Nicely made with fresh spices, fresh coconut and finely cut beef with fat! Georgeettan adds freshly boiled carrot and potato to it and packs my order. Costed me 180RS for 2 puttu, 2 beef stew and some amazing memories :-)
I managed to get the food home while it was still warm. Ladies of the house loved it! Thanks to simple food from simple couple, our evening turned out to be good. We are definitely going again!
Few things: Bike can be parked on the side of small road. Parking a car - find a place on the main road and walk to hotel. Google pay is available. They cook only once and close as soon as they run out so...
Read moreThis tiny food joint opens at 5 PM Monday to Saturday. There are hardly 10 seats available for dining. It's crowded and you will have to finish your food asap to give your chair to the next person waiting outside. There isn't even a name board outside the store. This is located on Kotheri road. If you are coming from the Cheranalloor side this road is a deviation to the right after passing the Vaduthala St. Antony's church. Car parking can be slightly challenging as the roads are busy and congested. There are options on the menu. One is Puttu+beef stew and the other is Puttu+Potty curry. Both are priced at Rs. 80 per combo. Puttu is just awesome so is the beef stew. But Potty curry wasn't that great, though it was cooked properly there was an...
Read moreRun by George Chettan & his wife. The menu remains the same since decades. Don't expect to find anything more than the only 3 items they serve - Puttu, Potty & Beef Stew - that too only if you are there between 4:30 - 07:00 in the evening. Though the place is open till 8:30, lady luck should generously grace you after 7:00 because the place closes as soon as the the food prepared is over. You will miss noticing the small place even if you are looking for it - I had walked up & down the road at least 50 times, over months, before I knew a Café was functioning out of the small single room building with a...
