My super honest take:
It's just an average bakery being run out of a house. The offerings are average at best. If you're from a fairly big city (for ex: Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, etc.), chances are that you've already had far superior bakery products. No offense to the bakers, but whatever was sold as a Chocolate Eclair is basically a tiny sponge cake with some unsweetened custard like filling, with a dry chocolate blob at the top. Of all the Eclairs I've sampled over the years, this one just doesn't qualify as an "Eclair".
Another hassle: You're not allowed inside even the Verandah. You have to wait on the footsteps (like you're a postman delivering mail) and place your "bulk" order for the products. I understand the other reviews here where they have an issue with the lady's rudeness. I won't go so far as to say that she was rude, but she has that "What do you want? Order quickly. Don't waste my time." kinda demeanor about her. 😅 Being the only customer at that time, I was a bit taken aback at this "order quickly" attitude (which I see frequently at a Fish Market).
Bottom Line: I have no idea about the hype. It's just an average bakery with average offerings (that your local bakeries probably already offer, without the...
Read moreIf you are anywhere near Margao/South Goa, DO NOT miss this place. I discovered this place only recently after more than 10 visits to Goa and I regret not knowing about them before. The eclairs are out of this world! But you HAVE to order before hand. Just call in the morning and pick it up anytime during the day. If you go there without ordering before hand be ready to be disappointed because it gets sold out before midday and there is not much to do around this place if you are specifically going there only for this except maybe exploring the village of Rachol and the Rachol Monastery. The folks at Jila Bakery know how to make their eclairs the best and no doubt they have been running such a successful business without any marketing for so many years. There are also other biscuits, cakes which can be bought without a preorder. Finally, read up a little about the history of this place. Will make the visit and the eclairs all the more worthwhile. Good old Homebakeries are always worth the...
Read moreWe travelled 40kms to the south of Goa to reach this bakery. Upon reaching, I was met by an uncle who asked what I wanted on my asking if the bakery was open. Honestly, that threw me off a bit because it came across as rude. Eventually, he brought me a menu with limited items that you can buy in half kgs/dozen or one kgs. I was expecting a place to eat because I hadn't eaten since morning having planned to eat here. There nowhere to sit. You will be waiting outside the house gate while they pack your order. Though the house is beautiful from the outside, located at a very quite and serene neighbourhood. Let's get to the taste, now. The eclair, which we had heard a lot about, tasted divine. We gorged four eclairs on the road outside. We immediately went back in to buy more. We also bought plum cake and Geneva pastries which were perfeeccct. Other than the service, which could be friendlier considering people often travel long distances, the experience...
