I strongly believe that the difference between a restaurant and a great eating place is the experience. You can be a very small eatery, but you can make up for it with enthusiasm, cheerfulness, delicious food and a great service.
Unfortunately, "Aami Bangali" lacks all of these. From the beginning to the end of our visit, nothing went right and to top it all, no one seemed to care either.
I wouldn't say that i entered the place without a preconceived notion. There are huge players like Bhaja Hari Manna and 6 Ballygunge Place which excel in this area. And a restaurant which proudly claims to be of pure Bengali culture definitely holds up a huge bright flag, shaking it vigorously to be counted in with the same players.
So my father and I entered the place and got ourselves seated. There was no one to welcome us. The managers were not in uniform so, you can't be sure whom to ask.
Finally, someone turned up to get the order. Now, a huge part of Bengali culture, or any Indian culture for that matter, is respect. More so, respect for the elders. The person who approached us for our order somehow had this understanding that I'm the decision maker and, therefore, will only pay attention to me. As a result, he kept talking to me, ignoring what my father had to say, until i told him to listen to him first.
"Aami Bangali" does not have a huge variety of food as such. The list is limited, but the item names are enticing enough to wring out emotions and fond memories of anyone who is familiar with classic Bengali food.
To get started, we ordered a Bhetki Bhaja (Kolkata Bhetki Fish Fry). The waiter was unable to help us with any information on the portion size, except for using the pen in his hand to show a one-dimensional view of how large it is going to be. So, we ordered a single piece, along with a thums up and a Sprite.
And thank God we did that. The fish fry that came up, was just a fish fry - no lemons or onions or anything remotely that could be eaten with the fish fry. Just a small portion of a fish fry served on a tissue in a brass plate. I mean, i understand the role of the tissue paper in soaking up the oil, but that is something we do at home, not in a fancy restaurant.
The fish fry was unnecessarily "tok", or sour. I have never eaten a fish fry which had been made sour, just to avoid giving lemons on the side.
My Thums Up was warm. So, i asked the waiter to change that, which he promptly did.
For the main course, we ordered Basanti Pulao and Mutton Kosha, which turned up in no time. "The service is quick", dad said. And as soon as we started eating, we realised why it was quick. Both the items were at room temperature. It didn't even seem like they made an effort to heat it up. I asked the waiter for a fork, but he said they didn't have any.
We ate less than half the portion of what was served. The rest was "parceled" up.
While dad went to wash his hands, the table cleaner approached and put his bottle of Colin on the side of the table where dad was sitting. And then he placed another plate on the table which had bits of rice and food particles which he had collected from another table. At first i thought he would clean up and go, but then when he stood there still, i realised he was waiting for me to leave, right at the table. A waiter saw this and tried to quickly shove him away, but he wouldn't budge, until the waiter asked him to leave.
The manager approached and asked how the food was. I said it was terrible. The manager smiled and said, "ok", with a grin on his face. There was a moment of silence and i thought he would ask me what went wrong or how things could have been improved. But no, his job was to only ask me how the food was, not a cent more. So, i added the information myself. I said that the cold item was served warm and the hot items were served cold. His reaction - "ok" - with a bigger grin than last time.
Anyway, that was it. I don't think I'm going to visit this place again. The ambience was good, no doubt, but the hospitality and food lacked warmth,...
Read moreWe went to Jamshedpur branch of Ami Bangali yesterday, 5th October 2025 for lunch at around 1:30PM. There was enough empty space, and we were 5 of us who opted for this restaurant while coming back from Netarhat to Kolkata. This effectively means a detour of approximately 10KM from highway. We requested them if their thali is shareable because we thought quantity will be too much for single person. They said NO, we accepted. We asked if extra portions are chargeable like Rice, Dal etc., they said YES. Did not understand the logic for not allowing to share when they are not giving a spoon of extra rice if needed within that price. They insisted that we do not choose thali, instead we should go for each item separately, but our team wanted to go for thali because in menu it was written it comes with varieties. We ordered 5 thali and one fish kobiraji for the younger member amongst us. The restaurant staff was like why one? will you share this? we said, no this is for the kid. Now coming to food. Only Rice, Dal, Chutney, Papad, Payesh was good. But Rice quantity was approx. half plate in thali, because when we ordered half plate extra rice the quantity was more than the rice served initially in thali. Who makes paneer butter masala spicy? Not eatable. Same with mixed vegetables, was too spicy. Now coming to the worst part. we ordered 3 katla fish thali, 1 polao with paneer butter masala (too spicy already mentioned) and 1 polao with mutton. We requested specific fish piece and mutton with less fat (chorbi), they again said NO, you cannot choose in thali. We accepted. One of the fish pieces was not fried properly (UNCOOKED), the color itself was reddish (blood visible). When we called them to show the same, they were like it happened. No courtesy for a sorry even, forget about any other expectations from them. One of the staff however said once that they will give us a katla fish fry which we refused because by then we were done. The staff who was attending was an elderly person and understood he is well trained in saying NO and not only him, few others also who were serving was clear in saying NO. I never ever felt like they wanted to see their customers coming back again OR they understood we were not locals. LASTLY, WE HAD A MUCH BETTER DINNER AT A LOCAL ONE YEAR OLD RESTAURANT IN DANKUNI which is incomparable in terms of branding and pricing with Ami Bangali. Will never go there again.
Never ever compare Ami Bangali with Sholona bangali, Bhooter Raja dilo bor, Oh Calcutta etc. where we had much...
Read moreDespite a nearly vacant dining room, my recent visit was marred by an inexplicably long wait and service that was anything but welcoming. Upon entering a restaurant with more empty tables than patrons, one would anticipate prompt and attentive service. Unfortunately, this was not the case !!! The wait to be served a menu was just the prelude to a much longer and more frustrating wait for our order to be taken and for the food to eventually arrive. The minutes ticked by, turning a hopeful lunch into an exercise in patience-testing. The lack of warmth from the wait staff was as palpable as the delay. From the moment we were grudgingly shown to our table, the service felt cold and indifferent. There were no smiles, no welcoming patter, and our attempts to engage with the staff were met with curt responses. It felt less like we were valued guests and more like an inconvenience. While a restaurant's primary draw is its cuisine, the overall experience is what truly defines a dining establishment. Regrettably, the prolonged wait and the unwelcoming attitude of the staff completely overshadowed any culinary merit the kitchen might have possessed. A restaurant experience is a symphony of food, ambiance, and service; when the latter two are so discordant, the entire composition fails. For those seeking a pleasant and timely dining experience, I would, based on my recent visit, hesitate to recommend . It is my sincere hope that the management will address these critical issues of timing and staff training to prevent future patrons from sharing a similarly disheartening experience. The less I speak about the food is better. The fish curry was a mess of turmeric and salt cold water. I would rather say a good fish commited suside by drawing in this sorry state called curry. The worst curry money could buy.
The biggest mistake of my life was to visit this establishment. We were glad to...
