Had saved this place on Google maps during the lockdown. When I came home this year (after about 3 years) I was dying to eat sea food. Had also saved Thimappa, but looking at the queue outside the restaurant reminded me of a factory.
As we were turning back, I spotted Kaliyuga (which is also a clever play on words) on Google maps from my saved list and we navigated to it, . The outdoor ambience is just great. The Kali is spot on, but we went easy on it as overdoing it can sometimes give you a case of the loosies.
Food was great. The crab sukka and the squid in garlic butter was good too and so was the neer dosa. However we felt that the price was a bit high, but we weren't sure what the prevailing rates were in Malpe. Maybe the rates were reasonable.
Service was okay. We didn't mind that we had to go to the counter for more neer dosas. Plan to go here again when I come back on vacation, just to enjoy the sea breeze, quietness and the food and drink, but will order something cheaper as we can cook the expensive stuff just as well at home for a lot less.
My grandfather once had a house on the Beachfront but we were too small to remember it. I have fond memories of us as kids visiting Malpe with my grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and my own family.
Reading other reviews, I think Kaliyuga should clearly mention on the menu (if they haven't already) that they use coconut oil. I have no issues with coconut oil and those who don't like it don't know what they're missing out on, but it is good if guests can make an informed choice than have a bad evening and leave a...
Read moreImagine chilling by the beach with a cool drink in hand, the breeze blowing through your hair, and a plate of delicious seafood in front of you. That's the vibe at Kaliyuga Toddy Cafe in Malpe, Udupi. This place is all about fresh, local flavors, with their specialty being toddy, a palm wine that's a real taste of the region. Now, toddy isn't for everyone, but if you're interested in trying it, this is a great spot. It's known for being high quality and refreshing. But even if you skip the toddy, the food is what really shines. They're famous for their seafood dishes, especially the squid chilly fry. Be warned, it packs a bit of a punch, but in the best way possible! The location itself is pretty sweet too. You're right next to Malpe beach, so you can soak up the sun and the ocean views while you devour your meal. The atmosphere is laid-back and casual, perfect for a relaxed lunch or dinner with friends. Just keep in mind that it can get crowded, especially on weekends. Also, vegetarians might find options a bit limited here as seafood is their specialty. But if you're a seafood lover or curious about toddy, Kaliyuga Toddy Cafe is definitely worth...
Read moreFood is good but only if you like local and seafood preparation. Coconut oil is used since you are in the coast so people who can't handle it beware. The seafood preparation was all great and fresh. The prices are very reasonable. Direct view of the ocean from the top 4 tables but the ones at bottom don't have any sea view. Things like fried rice, roti are average to bad - go for local like neer dosa , fish curry, chicken curry etc. The service is horrible. Don't come here if you are in a hurry you WILL have a bad time. They are consistently slow which we didn't mind due to the view and we were there to chill. Evening beware of mosquitoes carry odomos but that's the case with all open air restaurant...
