We stopped at Kamat Upachar while driving back from Goa to Mangalore. The restaurant is not visible from the highway and can he accessed through a narrow lane next to a Petrol bunk. Only the regulars or locals will thus be aware of this restaurant. There is a big parking area in front of it, where I could also see some trucks/ vans parked. There is a huge male toilet (access from outside the restaurant), big enough to park a truck and have space left over, but most of the toilet urinals/ partitions were damaged/ broken and it was filthy as hell. The female members of the party stayed away from the ladies toilet which could be accessed from inside the restaurant.
We ordered Mangalore buns (prepared hot & fresh) along with coffee & tea. The buns were quite delicious, but the members who had opted for tea found it too sweet.
UPI option was available for making payment through GooglePay etc. But as the telecom/mobile data facility is close to non existent in Goa and on the highway as well, had to settle the bill via cash...
Read moreThis was the second time we were stopping at this Kamat Upchar restaurant on NH66 near Ankola. Belonging to the Kamat Yatrinivas group, they have acquired a good reputation of serving excellent pure vegetarian snacks and meals on the main highways of Karnataka. Their eateries are always next to a good petrol pump so one can take a pit-stop break and refuel one’s vehicle as well as refresh ourselves. The washrooms are always clean and well maintained, which is very necessary for any highway restaurant. There is a dedicated parking lot and a CCD nearby as well. We enjoyed our meal. Service was courteous but a bit slow. There are uniformed lady waitresses to serve you. Prices were very reasonable. The menu includes rice plates (thalis) and other nutritious Udupi and Malnad cuisine. They have very good service standards, and a relaxing ambience, at very reasonable prices. One can also buy local snacks like murukku, chakli, chikki, farsans and sweets at the cash counter. Card payment facility is...
Read moreThis is one of the last places I would take a break from a long journey. The food is good, but not the service. It reminds me of the movies we have seen where people are discriminated on the basis of the colour of their skins.
Me and my better half were travelling to Goa and took a break here to have breakfast, we saw an open area which looked quite inviting. As soon as we sat down, a waiter comes and tells me that we have to move. I am puzzled and he says, there are foreigners sitting nearby and we have to move. This pissed me off, who is this guy? What an audacity to tell me to move just because some firangs have chosen to sit in that part of the restaurant? How many Kamaths will run just because of the foreigners? All through my travels through SouthIndia, I prefer to take breaks in Kamath, but this attitude of the waiter pissed me off so much, I may think twice next. Anyways, the food was ok (I can not say good anymore after...
