Hotel Shetty Lunch Home in Kundapura is a place that holds a special spot in my heart, as I’ve been visiting it since I was young. Over the years, it has earned a reputation for its variety of delicious dishes, and it remains one of the go-to spots for food lovers in the region. Despite a few drawbacks, it’s still a venue I recommend, especially for those who enjoy coastal Karnataka cuisine.
One of the most popular dishes here is their Chicken Ghee Roast. I have vivid memories of how this dish used to taste when I was younger—it was truly a masterpiece of flavor back then. The rich aroma of ghee, the perfectly balanced spice blend, and the tender chicken made it an unforgettable experience. It’s the kind of dish that left you craving more every time. However, I must admit that the magic seems to have diminished slightly in recent years. While the Chicken Ghee Roast is still good, it no longer has that unique wow factor it once had. Whether this is due to a change in recipe, quality of ingredients, or some other factor, I’m not entirely sure, but I do hope they revisit the older recipe to regain that iconic taste.
Apart from that, most other items on their menu are consistently good. The seafood dishes, especially their prawn and fish preparations, are delightful. The meals are well-prepared, and the freshness of the ingredients really shines through in each bite. Their vegetarian options are also worth mentioning, offering a range of flavorful curries and side dishes that cater to a variety of tastes.
The ambiance of Hotel Shetty Lunch Home is simple and functional. It isn’t overly fancy, but it creates a comfortable setting for a family meal or a casual outing with friends. The service is generally quick and efficient, ensuring that your dining experience isn’t interrupted by long waits.
One thing I appreciate about this place is the availability of parking, which is a significant advantage in a bustling town like Kundapura. However, I find it a bit odd that they require you to hand over your car keys to the security guard, who then parks your vehicle. While I understand that this might be intended to make parking more organized, it can feel slightly uncomfortable for customers who prefer to park their own cars. This practice might not sit well with everyone, especially those who are particular about their vehicles.
In conclusion, Hotel Shetty Lunch Home continues to be a reliable choice for good food in Kundapura, and it carries a nostalgic charm for me. While there are a few areas that could use improvement—particularly the Chicken Ghee Roast and the parking process—it’s still a place I enjoy visiting. For anyone seeking a taste of authentic coastal Karnataka flavors, this restaurant is a solid option. My 4-star rating reflects the overall quality of the food, the nostalgia it evokes, and its enduring popularity despite some...
Read moreQuality had Degraded significantly since the last time we visited. There was no proper organisation nor waiting coupon for the waiting customers. We waited for 20 minutes and then got a table. Which is fine. We ordered 2 plates of chicken ghee roast 38 minutes before getting there. After the 20 minutes wait, we ordered malabar paratha because neer dosa was all out. And then we ordered Chicken Sukka , because the SATURDAY special “NATI Chicken Sukka” was also not available on a SATURDAY. We then waited for another 40+ minutes for the order to arrive. The sukka and paratha arrived. Hmmm where is the GHEE ROAST? That we ordered nearly 1 hour and 40 minutes ago. It arrived 15+ minutes after the sukka and paratha. So it took nearly 2 hours for the Ghee Roast. How was everything? The malabar paratha was undercooked. The Oil used for paratha was very bad. The oil used for sukka was also very bad. The chicken used for ghee roast was also not cooked correctly and tasted bad. Not to forget, we also ordered cold lime soda, which was not cold at all and tasted bad too. The mini AC room has no extra waiter to attend the customers at all. There’s just one. And yea, that waiter disappears in thin air when needed and appears after more than 5 minutes. The food was sooo bad that day. When we approached the billing counter, (I guess that guy at the counter is the owner. Not sure), we complained about the bad oil, and chicken. Turns out, it’s not just us. One other family complained the same. 2 elder men gave him a earful in Tulu. A waiter arrived and said there’s a complaint on undercooked chicken. When we complained about our problem as well, his reply in Kannada was simple , and I’m quoting and translating “ Other restaurants may do it. But we don’t. We use best Oil, and for Ghee we use Nandini Ghee”. Of course , when your restaurant is known for the creation of ghee roast and is so famous, why not have Ego as well. That too, so much Ego that you can’t accept feedback
I agree , that the restaurant was crowded, and maybe it was difficult to manage. But the restaurant is famous, wasn't it obvious that there will be a crowd on a weekend. What else was the owner/cook expecting.
It doesn't matter if the dish was created there/they know the actually recipe; what matters is, maintaining the quality and standard no matter how big/small the crowd is, or which day of the week it is.
I’m definitely not visiting Shetty’s Lunch Home, Kundapur anytime soon. Or maybe Never. How was the Chicken ghee roast ? Shetty’s ghee roast was very very bad compared to my first visit.
And this was just the second time I...
Read moreI recently dined at Shetty Lunch Home with a group of friends, and I must say, our experience was far from enjoyable. The standout feature of our visit was the shockingly arrogant behavior of the manager, which left a bitter taste in our mouths long after the meal was over.
From the moment we walked in, it was evident that something was amiss. Despite having made a reservation and spending a considerable amount on our meal (approximately 4000 INR), we were greeted with an attitude that can only be described as dismissive and rude. The manager's behavior was so unwelcoming that it overshadowed the otherwise decent ambiance of the restaurant.
What was even more disappointing was the manager's treatment of our group throughout the entire meal. Instead of offering assistance or recommendations, he seemed to make it a point to ignore our table. We felt like an inconvenience rather than valued customers who were contributing significantly to the restaurant's revenue that day.
As we perused the menu and placed our orders, the manager's attitude did not improve. He appeared visibly irritated when we asked questions about certain dishes and seemed to rush through our order, not giving us the chance to clarify or modify anything. This resulted in some of us receiving dishes that were not prepared as we had requested.
Perhaps the most disheartening part of the experience was when we approached the manager with a concern about one of the dishes that didn't meet our expectations. Instead of addressing the issue professionally and offering a solution, he responded with an astonishing level of arrogance. He dismissed our complaint without a second thought and left us feeling humiliated and unheard.
It's a shame that such an establishment with potential for good food and a pleasant dining experience is marred by the presence of an arrogant manager who clearly lacks basic customer service skills. Spending a significant amount on a meal should warrant respect and appreciation, regardless of the establishment's perceived status.
In conclusion, my experience at Shetty Lunch Home was soured by the unprofessional behavior of the manager. The bad attitude and disrespectful treatment we received, despite our substantial bill, overshadowed any positive aspects of the meal. I would caution others considering dining here to think twice before subjecting themselves to such an...
