If you’re a die-hard seafood lover looking for authentic, spicy, home-style Kerala seafood, Vellakanthari Seafood Spot on Ernakulam Container Road is an absolute must-visit Tucked away in a modest setting with a typical roadside charm, this place delivers flavor bombs that can compete with any high-end seafood restaurant.

Their Meen Pollichathu (fish wrapped in banana leaf and slow-cooked with masala) is easily the star of the menu — perfectly cooked, smoky, and bursting with traditional Kerala spices. The Fish Fry varieties, especially seer fish and pearl spot, are crispy on the outside and tender inside, with the masala seeping deep into the flesh.

One of my personal favorites was the Kozhuva (anchovy) fry — crunchy, spicy, and addictive. The Ayala fry (mackerel) was another standout, generously marinated and fried to perfection. The Chemmeen (prawn) roast had a lovely balance of spice and coconut, and the Kakka (clam) masala was rich, flavorful, and very filling.

Don’t miss their Crab Fry — spicy, finger-licking good, and cooked just right so the shell is easy to crack and the meat flavorful. The best part is the freshness of the seafood, which you can taste in every bite.

The staff are friendly, the service is quick, and the prices are very reasonable considering the generous portions and quality. It’s not a fine-dine atmosphere — but for anyone craving bold, traditional Kerala seafood, Vellakanthari delivers a truly satisfying experience.

Vellakanthari: A Dive into Authentic Kerala Seafood Delights Forget the polished chrome and starched tablecloths. If your palate craves a true Kerala seafood experience, with flavors as vibrant as the saris worn by the servers, then Vellakanthari is your culinary compass. This isn't your typical five-star cosmetic hotel, but a haven for those seeking soul-satisfying food, prepared with love and served with grace.

Vellakanthari charms not with its decor, but with its warmth. Forget polished cutlery – here, you embrace the warmth of chipped plates and the friendly clatter of shared meals. But what truly sets Vellakanthari apart is its heart. The servers, like seasoned aunties, shower you with warmth and care. They navigate the menu with ease, recommending hidden gems and feeding you with laughter as much as with delicacies.

Speaking of delicacies, prepare to be spoiled for choice. The menu brims with the bounty of the Kerala seas. Karimeen pollichathu, a pearlspot fish wrapped and steamed in banana leaf, explodes with delicate flavors. Chemeen ularthiyatu, prawns simmered in a coconut and turmeric gravy, is comfort food at its finest. And don't miss the meen curry, a fiery symphony of spices that dances on your palate.

Sure, Vellakanthari won't impress Instagram influencers with its modest décor. But for those seeking an authentic Kerala seafood experience, seasoned with warmth and generosity, it's pure magic. So forget the fancy facades and dive into the vibrant heart of Vellakanthari. You won't just fill your stomach; you'll fill your soul with the essence of Kerala's coastal magic.

A must-visit for seafood lovers seeking an authentic Kerala experience, brimming with flavor, warmth, and genuine hospitality. Forget the five-star glitz; this is where memories and deliciousness...

Visited Vellakkanthaari Restaurant for lunch and what an unforgettable experience it was! This place is an absolute heaven for seafood lovers. The sheer variety of fresh seafood available here is just wow. Every item screams freshness, and you can tell how passionately it's all prepared.

The restaurant was buzzing with people, mostly fellow seafood enthusiasts. It was especially heartwarming to see little kids relishing the food with such joy—clearly, this place appeals to all age groups!

We ordered:

Tiger Prawns Fry – Served as a generous portion (good enough for two), these jumbo prawns were perfectly marinated, mildly spiced, crispy on the outside, and super juicy on the inside.

Crab Meat – Melt-in-the-mouth tender! It had a beautifully balanced flavor profile, not too spicy, just perfect.

Neymeen Tawa Fry – The King of Fish lived up to its name. A big, chunky slice fried on the tawa, soft inside, and rich in flavor.

Chemballi Fry (Red Snapper) – Incredibly fresh, well-marinated, and crispy. The tangy salad it came with was a great touch.

Meals – Simple and wholesome, the perfect pairing with all the seafood.

Coconut Shake – A refreshing way to end the meal. Smooth, cool, and creamy—just what we needed!

The service was exceptional. The chechys (aunties) serving there were fast, and super polite. That kind of homely service is something you just can’t expect in a fine-dining setup. It added a special charm to the whole experience.

We’re definitely planning a second visit to try the endless list of dishes we missed—Prawns Roast, Prawns Fry, Clams Fry, Oysters, Meen Pollichattu, Crab Fry, Fish Curry... the list goes on!

If you’re a seafood lover and haven’t been here yet—you're missing out big time! Highly...

We had a memorable lunch at Vellakanthari Restaurant on Container Road, Kochi, and it truly deserves a shout-out. We were a group of 8 and came in hungry — and every single one of us left fully satisfied and impressed. We ordered a variety of dishes, starting with traditional Kerala meals that came with all the essential accompaniments. Alongside that, we tried beef fry, squid fry, chemmeen (prawn) roast and dry, and the showstopper — karimeen pollichathu. The flavors were authentic and bold, perfectly spiced, and cooked with a homely touch. The beef fry was crispy and flavorful, the squid was tender, not rubbery at all, and the prawns were juicy and packed with taste. The karimeen pollichathu was fresh and beautifully wrapped in banana leaf, with just the right amount of masala — truly a must-try. What really added to the experience was the location. The restaurant is set close to the lake, giving it a calm, breezy vibe. The view, the wooden decor, and the open layout made it feel peaceful and scenic — a great escape from the city’s hustle. It's a lovely spot to relax and enjoy a slow, satisfying meal. The staff were polite, quick, and attentive, handling our big group with no fuss. Service was prompt but friendly, and they made sure we had everything we needed throughout. I got the feeling the place might be run by Kudumbashree (though I'm not completely sure), and if that’s true, then it's even more heartening to see such great food and service from a local women-led initiative. Overall, Vellakanthari is a hidden gem on Container Road — perfect for families, groups, or anyone craving authentic Kerala seafood and meals in a beautiful setting. Will definitely be back!
