My wife Karen, my little beagle Rey and me decided to explore the other side of Varsoli - so we went to Mahesh Lunch Home at Nagaon in Alibaug. I need to clarify to all readers - please watch out as there are two restaurants with identical names side by side and both claiming to be ‘original’ Well, we landed up at the one which is NOT attached to Vaidehi Cottages (but to I think Pooja Cottages). We ordered a Prawns Thali and a Fried Pomfret and requested for Rice Bhakris. The Thali consisted of Fried Prawns, Prawn curry, Rice Bhakri, Rice and Sol kadi. The fried prawns were quite small in size but extremely delicious ! Rating 5/5 !! The Thali (Rs. 400/-) was decent but nothing exceptional. Rating 3/5 The fried Pomfret (Rs. 250/-) was good ( although I personally thought it had a slightly ‘fishy’ smell (if you know what I mean). Rating 3/5.
We also requested for Modaks (Rs.25/- each) which we packed and took home with us. The Modaks were truly outstanding : 5/5. Don’t miss out on ordering them for dessert.
The one steward on duty was friendly and service was quick - probably because there was just one more family besides us.
Overall rating
Ambiance 2/5 Food 3.5/5 Service 3.5/5
Surprisingly, the lady at the counter declined accepting a 2,000 rupee note on the pretext of having no change even though my bill was more than a 1,000 rupees. I settled the payment via GPay. This did leave a bad taste in the mouth - which was quickly erased when we had the Modaks at home
Would we visit this place again ? Hmm, maybe not since we noticed quite a few eating places nearby which looked interesting
Well, until the next review Cheers and take care

Read moreMahesh Lunch Home, a name synonymous with great food, unfortunately falls short of its lofty reputation. While the ambiance might initially impress, the dining experience is a stark contrast. The menu, though extensive, lacks innovation and originality. The dishes, while visually appealing, are a disappointment to the palate. The flavors are bland and lack depth, a far cry from the culinary delights one would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. Portions are meager, leaving diners unsatisfied and reaching for their wallets. The service, though polite, is often inefficient. Inattentive staff detract from the overall dining experience. The prices, however, are reasonable, still making the entire affair a costly mistake. The once-vibrant atmosphere now feels subdued. The lack of attention to detail is evident in everything from the presentation of dishes to the overall cleanliness of the restaurant. It's disheartening to see a once-beloved establishment decline in such a manner. While this place might still draw crowds based on its reputation, it's clear that the allure is fading. Unless significant improvements are made to the food quality, service, and value proposition, this once-renowned establishment risks losing its coveted status. It's time for Mahesh Lunch Home to reevaluate its approach and strive to regain...
Read moreIt is a very simple looking restaurant, but looks can be deceiving. This place has THE MOST AMAZING SEAFOOD.😍 This is the Mahesh lunch home with a board that says first, old and original. We had a large family order for lunch and the staff were so nice to accommodate to our requests. We ordered alot of things like surmai, prawns, chicken and Pomfret thali and starters like prawns and bombil fry, and crab curry. The taste was amazing they even adjusted the spice for kids. And we were served very quickly and you can tell their seafood is fresh. I recommend trying the crab coz the curry is very savory and the crab meat has a very lovely sweet taste to contrast. This place is worth the distance travelled...
