It was republic day and we decided to go for a short trip to Mankundu and Chandannagar. On the way, we arrived at a sweet shop near Mankundu rail station. Since we were all in a festive mood, we decided to buy a lot of sweets from it. The speciality was inscribed right on the top of the shop, "Jalbhara"! And to our utter delight, the sweets were not overpriced. The price starts from 30 to 300 rupees based on the size of the Sandesh. It was made of chhena and when you give a bite Nolen gur comes out of it.

Legend:

Jalbhara is a traditional sweet of Bengal and has a hilarious history behind its creation. According to the legend, at Telenipara, Bhadreswar, the famous Banerjees were reigning as ‘boro’ zamindar. The daughter of zamindar got married to the zamindar of Baidyabati. After all rituals, it was time for the son-in-law to revisit his in-laws’ house after a month. The wife of zamidar and their other daughters wanted to befool the groom. They called upon the famous sweet maker Surjya Kumar Modak to create something unique, that could delude their son-in-law. He thought a lot and finally, came up with an idea. He made a gigantic dry sweet, but inside it poured pure rosewater. When the groom made a bite, thinking it as dry as it seems, all the rose water leaked out and made his new Punjabi wet. The zamindar was very pleased and named this new sweet as Jalbhara.

Recommendation:

A must- try sweet for all. Apart from jalbhara, they also sell amrito paturi, chhena sweets wrapped in banana leaves, and that also comes at ₹ 30. They also offer scores of different sweets which are extremely seductive to our tastebuds. If you visit Chandannagar. Do visit this shop. I highly recommend this shop to all my...

I recently visited Surja Kumar Modak, a renowned sweet shop in Chandannagar, and the experience was delightful. The shop's ambiance captures the essence of tradition, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The variety of sweets offered is extensive, showcasing the rich heritage of Bengali confectionery.

What sets Surja Kumar Modak apart is not just the taste but the meticulous craftsmanship evident in each sweet. From the iconic Sandesh to the delicate Rasgulla, every piece reflects a perfect balance of flavors and textures. The sweets were incredibly fresh, attesting to the shop's commitment to quality.

The staff exhibited exceptional hospitality, providing recommendations and patiently assisting in my selections. The packaging was neat, ensuring the sweets reached home in pristine condition.

Surja Kumar Modak is a must-visit for anyone with a sweet tooth, offering an authentic taste of Chandannagar's culinary tradition. Whether you're a local or a visitor, the sweets here are a treat...

Have you heard of the famous sweet, 'Jolbhora' or 'Talsansh' ? Of course you have. It is a trademark delicacy of Chandannagar. This sweet is inextricably linked to the name of 'Surya Kumar Modak', one of the oldest sweet shops of the city. Apart from serving the above mentioned delicacy, the shop also serves various other mouthwatering sweets. If you say quality, then I hear Surya Kumar Modak. Inspite of all these, I have given 4 stars to it and I have my reason behind that. The only disadvantage of the shop is it's high pricing of sweets. In Chandannagar there are a number of good sweet shops, which serve almost similar quality and taste at a much lower price. Obviously, if you are planning to taste sweets of Chandannagar once, then you can go for Surya Kumar Modak. But it is not a pocket friendly shop, if you are buying sweets regularly. It gives a sense to one time visitors that the sweets cost that much, while it...

This place is in chadanagar, its close to Dr Bhaskar Das Home and chamber, around 800 meters away. Anyways so I was here and the owner told me that they invented jalbhara sweets, that is liquid ceter filled sweets the idea was their creation long ago. Its indeed a old and famous shop although I am not sure about their creation thing. The sweets are better the prices are a bit high but you pay for quality. Another thing is their sweet prices changes depends on the Channa or soured milk. Its a medium sized shop with a decent variety of sweets to try and it's right on the big road so it'd easy to find. If you happen to be around then and you want to Try or take some sweets, you can try this place
