Ondo Grill Batak in Medan is a culinary gem that promises a delightful experience for pork enthusiasts. The star of the show here is the grilled pork, surpassing the fried option in terms of flavor and succulence. The charred perfection of the grill enhances the pork's taste, making it a must-try for those with a penchant for savory delights.
Accompanying the mouthwatering pork is hot steamed rice, serving as the ideal canvas for the flavorful meat. Pairing the meal with a refreshing marquisa drink adds a complementary touch, elevating the overall dining experience.
The establishment maintains a commendable standard of cleanliness, contributing to a pleasant and hygienic atmosphere. Ondo Grill Batak provides two distinct dining settings, allowing patrons to choose between an outdoor or indoor experience based on their preference.
While the service is described as standard, it aligns with the overall casual and laid-back ambiance of the restaurant. The simplicity of the setting allows the focus to remain on the star attraction – the delicious grilled pork.
In essence, Ondo Grill Batak is a culinary haven in Medan, beckoning visitors to indulge in the tantalizing flavors of its grilled pork. With a choice of dining atmospheres and a menu that excels in simplicity and taste, it's a culinary destination that should undoubtedly be on the list for those exploring the vibrant food...
Read moreIntimate, peaceful, open-air (no AC) restaurant featuring Batak cuisine (a tribe in North Sumatra). Indoor and outdoor seating (but no AC even indoors, so ideally go on an overcast, cooler/rainier day!). Cash, debit cards (not credit cards) and bank transfer payments (not e-wallet) accepted. Does not serve breakfast and closes just before dinner time, so make this a lunch stop! Definitely on the pricier side for Medan but well worth the experience.
This was so incredibly delicious and pleasant! Indonesian and Sumatran food is good but tends to all taste the same after a while (my palette is not yet equipped to detect subtle variations on fried chicken and rice with chili peppers!). But this restaurant offers cuisine where there is much flavor beyond just the spice (and there is spice a-plenty, so beware!).
Babi Panggang is a delicious pork belly fried to a crispy crunch, almost like bacon. The grilled fish is tasty (if a bit dry). Their version of tofu - made from or with buffalo milk - is wonderfully smooth and reminds me of soft mozzarella or even ricotta.
Additionally they offer a variety of fresh juices that are not so common in the (many) places I've eaten in Medan. Here they feature soursop prominently and it's delicious mixed with passionfruit.
Highly, highly recommended for a very...

The ribs is superbly delicious, succulent and the sweet spice is finger lickin good. The fried BPK is to die for, crunchy and soft at the same time. Don't forget to dip it to the andaliman chili spice with sweet soy sauce.
But one thing really struck me this time is how good they are at servicing customers. You'll be warm welcomed by waitresses when you set foot. Waitresses whose are knowledgeable about their menus. They'll put before you samples of their dishes in small plates in tray so you can see for your self which is what in the menu. They'll recommend menus. When you ask for direction (to toilet in my case) they'll show you with open arms, not just pointing with finger. They have board to inform customers if someone's car is blocking another's car who wants to get out of the parking lot. Kudos for the waitresses and the mgmt who train them.
So if you're a restauranteur and wants to take notes on how to service your customers, I think you can learn a lot by coming to this...
