Flores is an island famous for its coffee. There are some of high-land dominated regencies where coffee grown very fertile. Here, coffee has been cultivated in wide areas of plantation and become their main source of economy. Almost all of the high-grade coffee beans were exported to fulfill both national and global market. The local market was always only able to got the low-grade ones to enjoy. Thanks to the Filosofi Kopi a series films first aired in 2015 which has successed in raising the awareness of many Indonesia coffee regions to further glorify and appreciate their coffee. Each of the coffee regions has build their own ecosystem involving the upstream-side and the downstream-side of the coffee trades to be inlined together and developing their local market competitively. While the upstream-side usually consist of coffee farmers and coffee processors, the downstream-side consist of coffee roasters and coffee shops with each of their own baristas and coffee products.
Here is Kopi Mane, the example of one of the coffee shop pioneers in Flores who struggle for the Manggarainese hopes & dreams of living through their proud of authentic Manggarai coffee. This coffee shop established 2015 in Ruteng the capital city of Manggarai Regency. It was named after Manggaraian habits which routinely drinking coffee to relax afterwork in the afternoon. He just retired from his job in Jakarta, came back to his home town and got the idea to boost the coffee business in this area. He also picked up my suggestion to buy some motor bikes for rent. Because at this time there was non allover Ruteng. He borrowed me the bike from his brother. Nowadays it is a busy place. Locals and travellers alike frequenting this still cozy place in the heart of Ruteng. Now he has five bikes for rent. The youngest daughter came back from Jakarta to help. He even opened a branch in Labuanbajo, which is run by his other daughter. His concept is genius and it seems to work quite fine.
