We stayed at Mathis Lodge in Amed for three nights as a family of three—two adults and our 4-year-old son—and it was such a unique experience. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but it turned out to be a beautiful escape from the busier parts of Bali like Ubud.
A heads-up for future guests, when you arrive, make sure to notify the hotel that you’ll be at the collection point. We had our own car, but it couldn’t make it up the steep, rocky road to the lodge itself. The hotel provides transport, and the drive up into the mountain takes around 10–15 minutes. Once you get up there, the views make the journey completely worth it—absolutely stunning.
The lodge itself is pretty isolated, so don’t expect to explore the local area by foot. It’s essentially just the hotel perched on the mountain with jaw-dropping scenery, which made for the perfect downtime after being in the hustle and bustle of Ubud.
We were kindly upgraded to a family suite, which was incredibly thoughtful, especially since the standard lodges were too steep and not ideal for our little one to navigate, especially at night.
The hotel has a spa and a pool, which were perfect for relaxing, and the restaurant really impressed us. Breakfast was included and offered both Western and Balinese options. The food was delicious—our son loved the mushroom gnocchi, and the “Oh My Cheese” burger was a standout for us!
The staff were genuinely lovely, and I really appreciated that the manager made a point of checking in with guests daily, making sure everything was going well.
If you’re looking for tranquility, incredible views, and a unique mountain escape, Mathis Lodge is a great option—just be prepared for the remote location and enjoy the...
Read moreThis restaurant is rated highly here and on TripAdvisor, so I knew I needed to try it. I’ve never been on the extremely challenging road to get here, so I found myself in doubt several times on the vertical ascent. I highly recommend the shuttle unless you’re extremely comfortable on your scooter.
The atmosphere was lovely, 5 stars.
Service: sadly not as great as all the reviews make it out to be. Everyone was kind of course, but it took us the entire meal to obtain the sparkling water we asked for. Coffee came late. Server didn’t really know [how to explain] the menu. I also recommend further training so that they can confidently put food down on the table.
The food was extremely average. I found the prawns dry, lacking flavor, textually unappealing. The yucca fries were more oil than yucca. Flavor was mild. The tuna was the favorite of the 3 appetizers. The nasi campur was average (and one could easily argue below average relative to the rest of Bali for its price). I do love the type of rice they use. The chocolate cake was tasty albeit aesthetically crumbling and without integrity, and we had to remind them that we had even ordered it. The ice cream was below average.
While I still enjoyed the meal and atmosphere thoroughly, I wouldn’t recommend making a special trip. I find the current...
Read moreWhile staying in Amed, we were looking for something different for dinner and came across Asmat after reading positive reviews on Google. With no preconceived expectations, we decided to take a chance—and we are so glad we did.
Our evening began with an adventure. Our taxi driver took us as far as the base of a steep road, where we were transferred into an off-road vehicle provided by the restaurant, which is part of the Mathis Group. The journey up the winding mountain road was scenic and took us through beautiful rural Amed. Upon reaching the top, we were warmly welcomed by the incredibly attentive staff, setting the tone for what would be an unforgettable evening.
The views were nothing short of spectacular, and the food matched the setting perfectly. From the perfectly cooked risotto to the juicy, flavorful burger, every dish was a delight. The crème brûlée, with its crisp caramelized top and smooth custard, was the perfect ending to an exceptional meal.
As we left, the experience remained remarkable. It was pouring rain, but the staff ran to fetch umbrellas and ensured we were safely huddled into the off-road vehicle for the journey back down. From starters to dessert, and the unique adventure to and from the restaurant, the entire evening was phenomenal—one we won’t...
