Taliwang Irama in Mataram, Lombok is widely celebrated as an authentic destination to taste the fiery and fragrant specialty of the region—Ayam Taliwang. With a TripAdvisor rating around 4.0 and ranking among the top 14% of restaurants in Mataram, it attracts both locals and tourists seeking that classic Lombok flavor. he story behind Taliwang Irama traces back to the Taliwang tribe’s culinary heritage. The name itself originates from the Karang Taliwang area in Mataram, where Ayam Taliwang was first crafted, reportedly around 1970. The founders came from a line of Sasak cooks who refined the signature method: grilling three-month-old free-range chickens, then tenderizing, oil-dipping, saucing with chili, garlic, and shrimp paste, and grilling again to achieve that balanced char and depth. Today, branches like Taliwang Irama 3 claim to preserve the original recipe, even using locally-grown kangkung and homemade coconut oil, passed down through generations.
The dish that most guests rave about is the classic Ayam Taliwang—spicy grilled chicken, succulently moist, boldly seasoned, and accompanied by sambal, plecing kangkung, and sometimes bebalung or beberuk. One TripAdvisor visitor summed it up: “The original place to eat the famous Ayam Taliwang from Lombok,” praising its “mouth-watering spicy-grilled whole chicken” and delightful local side dishes—though a few noted the portions can be modest and staff may struggle with English.
Overall, Taliwang Irama presents a well-rounded experience: deep-rooted food heritage, lovingly prepared and served in a laid-back and traditional atmosphere. While service may vary, the standout for most is undeniably that blazing-hot, perfectly grilled chicken—a true...
Read moreFirst of all, the food was good, not better then the ayam taliwang in the streets for 1/3 of the price, but it was good.
When we left, there was a guy with no shoes in the parking area and told me i need to pay 5k per scooter. I asked him if he is sure that this is legit and he sayed yes. I went back inside and asked the staff if the parking fee is legitand they sayed „yes yes maybe its 2k or 5k“ so you have a guy in the parking area collecting money for parking with no shoes and you dont know how much the parking is? Nice try. I payed the 5k and my wife left very fast without paying him.
So 2 options:
you guys really charge the parking for customers? Really? And that on top of the anyway high food price?
you fooled me and this guy was just a random guy scamming foreigners.
Its not about the money really, but both is not right. So i cannont recommend going there, i will not come back even if the...
Read moreLocals say the restaurant has been around for quite a long time and one of the best places in Lombok to serve Taliwang Chicken - grilled chicken with spicy spicy sauce or sweet and spicy sauce, depends on the order. Went to the place during dinner time and it was crowded. Some foods in the menu were no longer available to order, so we went for Ayam Taliwang Pedas Manis and Pelecing Kangkung. The bird was served whole per person/ portion though the size is bit small in size, still satisfying the empty stomach as it was served with quite big portion of white rice. The taste is decent, the highlight is - to me - the sambal, it was damn good. The pelecing kangkung is also decent in taste.
The place overall is comfortable enough with many choice of seatings. Staffs are okay-ish, service is a bit slow when crowded. As for the price, you get what you pay for....
