When you're looking for local food in Pontianak, one dish that often pops up is Nasi Campur (mixed rice). And among the many places that serve it in Pontianak, one of the more well-known spots is Nasi Akwang. Locals say there are actually other places that are just as good, but if it’s your first time in town, trying Nasi Akwang is definitely not a bad idea.

It’s located pretty close to our hotel, Gajah Mada Avara. We went there around lunchtime, and the place was packed. It’s not a huge restaurant—probably fits around 50 people inside—but it’s cozy enough, it has air-con. There’s also a small parking area out front that can fit a few cars.

Alright, now let’s talk about the most important part: The taste. Long story short, it did not disappoint! It totally lived up to our expectations for a solid plate of Nasi Campur. In a complete portion of Nasi Campur you will get rice, roasted chicken, and pork. They pour some kind of thick soup on the rice so it is not too dry. Every portion comes with a small bowl of broth which is light in flavor but delicious! Add some pepper on the soup to make it even better. The highlight is the pork toppings that came in several varieties and were all there. There was a bit of preserved veggie on the side (personally, I think they could’ve added more because it is soooo good).

The flavor was amazing—especially when you add their red chili sauce. So good! As for the price, it’s pretty standard for this kind of dish. A full portion with all the toppings costs IDR 65.000. You can also customize your plate by skipping any toppings you don’t want. No blood-based toppings included, by the way, which is good.

Besides Nasi Campur, they also serve Nasi Tim (steamed rice with chicken), but we didn’t try that this time....

As a curious Malaysian, I've always intrigued with "kuliner Pontianak" which was legendary among the folks here. The first place that I've tried was the infamous Nasi Campur Akwang where my Indonesian cousin introduce the place to me. The first thing that I noticed was damn, that's a lot of people inside. I was skeptical at first about the food as I do wonder how a simple plate of nasi campur can be pretty much sought after by the folks here. After tried it myself, I was totally in the state of euphoria. "The roasted meat was an absolute bomb!" I freaking love it, NGL The only downside was the price, about 60000 rupiah for a plate of nasi campur but sometimes it feels good to splurge once in a while. Totally...
