I had the chance to visit Warung Babi Guling Pande Egi in Gianyar, Bali, and it was an unforgettable experience. Tucked away on the way from main road to Ubud this warung is a gem surrounded by lush rice fields, offering a serene backdrop that instantly sets a relaxed vibe. The open-air dining area is spacious, clean, and modern yet retains a traditional Balinese charmโperfect for soaking in the cool breeze while enjoying a meal.
I arrived around 11.30 am, and the place was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, a testament to its popularity. Despite the crowd, the staff was incredibly efficient, using electric buzzers to manage the waitlist, which kept things organized. I was seated almost immediately with a stunning view of the rice paddies.
I ordered the Nasi Babi Guling Jumbo (IDR 38,000, roughly $2.50 USD), which came loaded with tender suckling pig, crispy pork skin, pork sausage, lawar (a traditional Balinese vegetable mix), pork satay, and a savory pork soup. The pork was melt-in-your-mouth soft, with a smoky, well-spiced flavor, and the skin was perfectly crackly. The sambal matah added a fresh, spicy kick that tied everything together. I also tried their โes dalumanโ, a refreshing dessert beverage of mixed grass jelly in coconut milk and palm sugar, which was a great palate cleanser.
The service was friendly and professional, even with the hectic pace. The warung has clearly evolved since its early days as a small local spot in 2016, now boasting a larger space and extras like coffee and Balinese โjajanan pasarโ (local cakes and desserts). I noticed a group next to me order a whole roasted pig for takeout, which looked impressive and apparently feeds 6-12 people for around $120 AUD.
My only minor gripe was the wait time during busy hours (noon), but the food and ambiance made it worthwhile. If youโre planning a visit, Iโd recommend arriving early (before noon) to beat the rush or catching the sunset for an even more picturesque experience. Warung Babi Guling Pande Egi lives up to its legendary status as one of Baliโs best babi guling spotsโhighly recommended for anyone craving authentic Balinese cuisine in a beautiful settings and local price!

The rice fields surrounding the eatery was a good way to experience early dinner and sunset in Ubud.
The food wasn't anything to shout about but the service was great as it is almost anywhere in Bali.
We went for the special set with every parts of pork they had to offer.
After getting our bellies filled, we made our way back to our hotel hoping to end the day a little more relaxed with dinner dealt with.
Imagine the horror thats about to come next. The dreaded Bali Belly!
It started off with my stomach grumbling all sorts of weird noises you can ever think of while on the scooter back. Thinking I just had a huge meal just moments ago I brushed it off.
As soon as we arrived at the hotel my stomach literally started churning in the worst ways possible, as soon as I sat on the toilet the waste came gushing down like a waterfall. After I was done, I attributed it to a one off thing due to indigestion and went straight to shower.
The next 24 hours will relive one of the worst moments of my life due to food poisoning.
The diarrhea never stopped, nausea came, the vomiting started, then 2 to 3 bouts of vomiting consecutively with all the spicy "sambal" regurgitated out. Then was weakness and dehydration. Literally spent the next 3 days recovering from it, missing out on all the scheduled and planned attractions, beautiful sceneries and restaurants.
If you ever come to Bali, don't ever let your guard down. We did for that one meal and paid the ultimate price.
I'm not sure if overconfidence and lack of quality control caused the poor food hygiene due to the fame they have gotten? The meats are served cold so they're likely not properly kept and only cut when serving.
One things for sure. I'm never...
