MAMBERAMO (LIVE) SEAFOOD — Restaurant in Sorong

We had 1 day in Sorong and our hotel receptionist recommended this place for seafood. It’s a popular place with the locals. Menu is more limited towards seafood dishes which suited us well.

They have live seafood tanks located at the back of the restaurant where you can choose.

We tried the coconut crab, huge one weighing 2.25 kg, cooked in Singapore chilli sauce and fried vermicelli. Absolute perfection. Chef was from China and he did an amazing job.

The tofu, bitter gourd eggs were good too.

Another stand out was the grilled squid. Perfectly grilled, only complain was it overly spicy sauce on top.

Best seafood in Sorong! In fact Mamberamo Seafood served the best meal we had on our entier trip to West Papua and Raja Ampat. The crab in chilli and crab with ginger was just fantastic. The steamed snapper wa apso fresh and tasty. The service was excellent, and James (owner) told us some interesting thing about the history of the early tourism in the area. A local place for local people but with fresh (LIVE!) seafood that is cooked perfectly and in many different variations. We had a enormous lobster which was the best lobster I've had since leaving New England. They serve two sizes of seafood platter, and think a few times before getting large because it is enormous.
