Art Cafè 1968 — Restaurant in Aiello Calabro

This is THE local bar in the heart of Aiello Calabro. Simone, the owner, is a friendly guy and he has done a somelier course, so he knows his wines! He always has a wonderful collection of rare rhum and grappa, but whatever you want, ask and he will have it. He is always ready to make you try new beers, wines or spirits and will never shy away from giving you a bit of history about what you are drinking. The bar also does local food and pizza, plus they bake their own croissants at midnight every night! The food is SPECTACULAR, soo tasty, with local recipes made in an "old style grandma" way. Try the pizza, baked in the oven, or the pasta, you will not be disappointed. If you want to really dive into the local delicacies, from cured meat to stuffed local "pitta" bread, ask him for a mixed appetizer, but be ready to eat huge amount of food!! His wine list is also to die for, researched and rigously local. His wife is often there helping him and she is super sweet and a wonderful guest. If you get there on a summer evening, the place is full of local families, youngsters sitting outside on the stairs, older people sipping their wine or beer. If you are new to the village, be ready to be immediately involved in a conversation with the locals, who will be asking you where you are from and will immedutaly welcome you by offering you a drink (or two, or three!). Their English may not be the best, but they will find a way to communicate!! You will realize very soon that everyone knows everyone here, and Simone will greet everybody calling them by name. The welcoming atmosphere of the place is a reflection of the people living in this village, and if you need to walk a bit to digest after eating here, just take a stroll in this amazing 1300 a.c. medieval village. Decided to have a ride out living only 20 minutes from this bar. It was a quiet Saturday afternoon so not many people around. The staff were friendly enough, the bar quite rustic and nice with a good selection of wines and spirits, I didn't have anything to eat.
