L'Antico Borgo — Restaurant in Morano Calabro

It never disappoints. This restaurant has been there for many years and, unlike several around here, it gets better all the time. The food was amazing, from appetisers to dessert, each dish was a joy to the eyes but most importantly to the palate. My highlight was the octopus in the picture. Sublime! Service was a bit confusing to begin with, QR menus for me are a covid-era thing and the app they use allows for ordering in, which wasn't needed. Once this issue was solved, everything went smoothly. We were a multilingual group and, amazingly around this area, the waiter could help in more than one! Eating outdoors in a nice pergola amidst the medieval urban landscape is the cherry on top. A must when in the north...

Ho avuto occasione di degustare una selezione di piatti dal carattere indubbiamente complesso e dalla composizione ricercata, frutto di una cucina che si propone come intellettualmente stimolante. Tuttavia, nonostante l’evidente sforzo creativo, l’esperienza gastronomica nel suo complesso ha lasciato in me una sensazione di disconnessione: le proposte, sebbene ammettiamo la loro originalità, sembrano mancare di un filo conduttore che renda la loro fruizione appagante e coerente. Oltre a ciò, è doveroso segnalare come, nonostante la maggioranza dei commensali non abbia minimamente toccato alcuni piatti, il conto sia stato addebitato per intero senza alcuna considerazione in merito. Un dettaglio che contribuisce a una percezione complessiva di scarsa attenzione verso il cliente. Il contesto si è ulteriormente complicato dalla difficile apertura al dialogo costruttivo: se da un lato si accolgono con entusiasmo le lodi, dall’altro le critiche – seppur espresse con garbo e spirito costruttivo – sembrano incontrare una chiusura poco incline al confronto. A ciò si aggiunge un servizio caratterizzato da un atteggiamento saccente e talvolta presuntuoso, che ha contribuito a creare una distanza ulteriore tra l’esperienza culinaria e il cliente.

È doveroso riconoscere la volontà di proporre una cucina d’autore, che necessita di essere “compresa” più che semplicemente assaporata, tuttavia questa raffinata complessità non è riuscita a conquistare pienamente il mio palato, né a coinvolgermi emotivamente. The absolute most incredible meal I have ever had in my entire twenty two years of existence, and I have been around the world. It is mind-boggling, stupendous, confounding, how delicious, shockingly delicious this was. This restaurant single handedly made me into a foodie. I will be thinking about this meal when I am eighty seven years old with dementia. I am seriously not exaggerating in the slightest. I would go as far as to say this is a bucket list restaurant. Incredibly underrated....
