Never underestimate your guests

Having eaten here 2,5 years ago and remembering being impressed by the setting and the food, I decided to take my partner here for lunch. Our experience this time unfortunately was spoiled. The food was average (the carbonara was not very tasty and had little pieces resembling scrambled egg in it), but could have been an occasional miss and forgivable, had the owner not behaved as he did. Since we felt like having a light lunch, we both ordered – in a mix of Italian and English - a pasta and a bottle of water. After a surprised “E poi?”, we confirmed that that would be all for today. Clearly shocked by our choice for a modest meal, the owner went on to the table next to us to start of a series of jokes about “these tourists who just order a pasta and a water, and most probably a tiramisu for desert – thinking they were experiencing proper Italian kitchen”. (Un)fortunately(?) my partner’s Italian is good enough to be able to understand... After coming back with our lunch, he put our plates down after having presented them “subtly” to the couple at the other table. That was the moment we should have actually left, but being a bit caught off guard we decided to stay and try to enjoy our lunch. Again, the owner moved to the table next to and picked up on his jokes. Unfortunately - since the owner did not speak English and our Italian speaking skills are very limited - we did not feel comfortable to bring up what we had overheard, so we ate our meals, paid and left. We understand that nobody is free of prejudices and we as well make the occasional joke about other tourists from time to time, but doing it in front of your guests is something to be careful with, because it spoils what otherwise would have been a pleasant experience.
Mai sottovalutare i tuoi ospiti
Avendo mangiato qui 2,5 anni fa e ricordando di essere stato colpito dall'ambiente e dal cibo, ho deciso di portare la mia compagna qui per il pranzo. La nostra esperienza purtroppo questa volta è stata rovinata. Il cibo era mediocre (la carbonara non era molto gustosa e aveva piccoli pezzi che assomigliavano a uova strapazzate), ma avrebbe potuto essere una mancanza occasionale e perdonabile, se il proprietario non si fosse comportato come ha fatto. Dato che avevamo voglia di un pranzo leggero, entrambi abbiamo ordinato - in un mix di italiano e inglese - una pasta e una bottiglia d'acqua. Dopo un "E poi?" sorpresi, abbiamo confermato che sarebbe tutto per oggi. Chiaramente scioccati dalla nostra scelta per un pasto modesto, il proprietario è andato al tavolo accanto a noi per iniziare una serie di battute su "questi turisti che ordinano solo pasta e acqua, e molto probabilmente un tiramisù per il deserto - pensando che stanno vivendo una vera cucina italiana ". Per fortuna l'italiano della mia compagna è abbastanza buono da essere in grado di capire il tutto... Dopo essere tornato con il nostro pranzo, ha messo i nostri piatti giù dopo averli presentati "sottilmente" alla coppia all'altro tavolo. Quello era il momento in cui avremmo dovuto lasciare, ma essendo un po' presi alla sprovvista abbiao deciso di restare e abbbiamo cercato di goderci il nostro pranzo. Di nuovo, il proprietario si è messo al tavolo accanto e ha continuato con le sue battute. Purtroppo - dal momento che il proprietario non parlava inglese e le nostre capacità di parlare italiano e’ molto limitato - non ci sentivamo a nostro agio di chiarire quello che avevamo sentito, così abbiamo mangiato i nostri pasti, pagato e siamo andati via. Comprendiamo che nessuno è libero dai pregiudizi e di tanto in tanto facciamo scherzi occasionali su altri turisti, ma farlo davanti ai tuoi ospiti è qualcosa su cui fare attenzione, perché rovina ciò che altrimenti sarebbe stata...

When the casoncelli arrived, I was surprised by the choice to add bacon instead of pancetta, which is called for in the original recipe. I wasn't particularly happy with the result, both because of the not very tasty flavors and because after three forkfuls I found a piece of plastic from the bacon wrapper on my plate. As soon as I noticed it, I called the waiter, who offered to refill my plate, but given the situation, I preferred not to eat anything else. The other pasta was decent but not very tasty. Read moreIt was raining, it was late, we had the restaurant to ourselves and we were spoiled! Most Delicious food, brought by a friendly-always-smiling-always-helping staff, exactly the way we wanted it and without even saying it. We felt good, we ate a lot, we couldn't stop.
