In early October we spent three supremely happy, indulged days staying with Renate in her agriturismo: up a long windy road in a mountain valley, just over an hour from Turin. She is the perfect host, cooks wonderfully - all local or from her garden - proper Piedmontese home cooking (incredible value of course) in front of her log burning stove. In mid afternoon the bar/restaurant fills with locals but, being a very quiet time of the year, we had Renate all to ourselves at breakfast and supper time. She is one of only 18 permanent residents left in the village (once a centre for talc mining), deeply rooted in the local community, and is fascinating to talk to (in Italian, although her first language is Occitane). We loved her - she is the kindest, sweetest person. It is not for those whose preferences lie in globalised luxury hotels - although we could not have been more comfortable - but if, like me, you are constantly in search of the original and unspoilt, Miando dal 1989 is the place for you. She added to our joy by unlocking the old school room up the hill, now the village museum, over which there is a dormitory for 12, also heated by a log burner, also run by Renate. Quelle belle expérience j'ai eu à La Miando!! Ma première "bagna cauda" à vie dans cet emplacement tout à fait charmant entouré des montagnes à couper le souffle. Un plat typiquement piémontais savoureux, servi "à volonté" par notre hôte, PierLuigi, débordant de cordialité et d'empressement envers ses invités. J'ai même eu droit à un service en français! Merci pour votre hospitalité! Et...ajout de mon amoureux: ... Memorabile, autentico, familiare, commovente… Non ho parole per descrivere l’eccellente pranzo di bagna cauda e l’atmosfera creata dal signore Pierluigi nel suo ristorante La Miando. Mi spiego. Sono venuto dal Québec per trovare mia mamma, una persona anziana con mobilità ridotta, e altri parenti. Volevo una esperienza indimenticabile che unisse tutti . Mi sono anche messo a studiare il piemontese e ho deciso per la bagna cauda come elemento d’unione. Pierluigi ha fatto il resto. È stato magico, mi ha trattato come se lo conoscessi da sempre, ha scovato un passaggio per la macchina di tal maniera che mia mamma ha potuto passare dalla macchina alla sala pranzo con pochi passi. Ma non solo, Pierluigi ci ha servito ininterrottamente una bagna cauda squisita come me la ricordavo da bambino oltre 50 anni fa , e verdure, vino , pane, dolce, formaggio, caffè tutto a volontà. L’atmosfera che Pierluigi ha creato è stata tale che anche se abituato a parlare in pubblico l’emozione mi ha bloccato e le lacrime hanno rimpiazzato il discorso di ringraziamento che ho voluto fare hai parenti e amici. Se non bastasse tutto questo alla fine Pierluigi ha dato a tutti della bagna cauda da portare a casa così come un contenitore pieno di verdure. A me ha regalato un bel fungo porcino. Non è stato un pranzo ma un evento. Non poteva andare meglio. Una esperienza indimenticabile che non ha prezzo. 😊: Pierre is a very welcoming host. The location is very quiet which is just what I was looking for. I was there to ski in Prali (great place) and it’s 18k drive through the beautiful valleys to Prali. It looks an ideal base for summer walking too! I would recommend having the evening meal too as it was a great selection of home made Piemonte cuisine from Pierre. Rustic charm!
