La locanda del re - Ristorante pizzeria — Restaurant in Santa Severina

After missing lunch in Squillace we were in the mood to eat as soon as we arrived in Santa Severina, boy did we get lucky that we stopped at this little taverna right next to the castle with Nonna cooking and Nonno running the cash. The menu is a little large for my liking but they are trying to cater to everyone’s tastes that comes to visit the castle and from what I sampled they are doing it very well. We started with a plate of sausage sugo with gnocchi for my wife, for me a plate of spaghetti aglio e olio both were perfectly cooked with light fluffy gnocchi and perfectly al dente pasta. We followed our primi with my all-time favorite bridge between land and sea great as a secondi or antipasti, the wonderful vitello tonnato king of the surf and turf in my humble opinion. Wonderful atmosphere, food, service, and location. This is a small, intimate local restaurant at the foot of the castle in the old town of Santa Severina. Drive towards the castle and turn left through the arch and go under the castle causeway to park just a few steps from the restaurant. Inside is a fireplace and two rooms with old photos and memorabilia, including a king's chair in the corner, a photo of the owner in Milano (1961) and his wife. The elderly couple who run this place are charming. He mans the computer while she cooks and serves (in other words, she does all the work!). Difficile che mi convinca a scrivere una recensione su internet, ma uno scatto di altruismo mi porta a farlo perché non abbia sulla coscienza i futuri avventori di questo ristorante. La recensione è da una stella perché meno non si può mettere: servizio più che scadente (avevamo ordinato un antipasto da spartire in 4, ne è arrivato uno per una sola persona che ci siamo dovuti dividere; tra l'altro il primo, per il quale abbiamo atteso un'ora, è arrivato prima dell'antipasto e non era quello scelto); il vino della casa era talmente imbarazzante che,oltre a mandarlo indietro, ho avvertito vergogna al posto del ristoratore per avere trovato il coraggio di servirlo (il vino in bottiglia che ci è stato portato in alternativa era poco più bevibile); la qualità delle portate non è stata certo memorabile, nè lo era la quantità. In tutto questo però il giudizio più negativo va ai titolari, i quali evidentemente pensano di annunciare quanto subito dopo smentiscono con i fatti. Quando infatti il misero antipasto arriva sul tavolo, ci viene annunciato che questo sarebbe stato offerto dalla casa, come parziale risarcimento dei ritardi e al momento stesso del conto ci viene riferito che avrebbero praticato uno sconto ulteriore: niente di tutto questo avviene. Infatti non solo l'indecoroso vino della casa, respinto per la pessima e (mi viene da pensare) insalubre qualità , viene sommato a quanto ordinato, ma nel totale figurava l'antipasto e non c'era ombra di uno sconto annunciato appena un minuto prima. Insomma, andare alla locanda del re per l'ottimo panorama che offre è un modo costoso e irritante di godere di una vista che altri punti di Santa Severino offrono...
