We were incredibly lucky to get a table at Restaurant Escal without a reservation—it wasn’t until after our meal that we learned it’s considered a must-visit spot in Akkeshi. To walk in and be seated right away felt like a rare stroke of good fortune.
The restaurant is located inside the roadside station (Michi-no-Eki) in Akkeshi, and it truly lives up to its reputation. As expected, the highlight here is oyster dishes, and they certainly did not disappoint. Every dish we tried was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared—showcasing Akkeshi’s well-known seafood at its best.
What made the experience even more unforgettable was the journey itself. Driving from Kushiro to Akkeshi, we were treated to some breathtaking scenery. Just before arriving, we looked up and were amazed to see a sun halo (a ring around the sun), a rare atmospheric phenomenon. It added a sense of wonder to the day and made the entire outing feel truly special.
In the end, between the spontaneous table availability, the stunning natural sights, and the delicious oyster-focused cuisine, everything about our visit to Restaurant Escal felt like it was meant to be. If you’re planning a trip to Akkeshi, this restaurant is a must. And if you’re lucky—like we were—you might just catch a seat and a rare glimpse of nature’s beauty...
