Just came from the most intoxicating dinner at Arutokoro. If you've never been to Kyushu, there are many reasons to go there. But this restaurant gave me a reason to come back again and again.
It may sound overstated, but this was the best dining experience I've had in decades... perhaps ever! I can't decide which of the nine or ten courses was best. That would be like asking which of your ten children was best. It was just a reverberation of textures and flavors and, above all, effortless finesse. All in the most beautiful of physical circumstances - a great old machiya restored by the hand of the very person cooking and serving.

My husband still thinks about this meal. It's simple ingredients at their height of flavor treated with dignity and refinement. It's not flashy but speaks to the soul of the ingredients. We came away enchanted. At the same time it doesn't have that air of seriousness that restaurants who specialize in this type of food can have. There was a group of ladies in a the private room having a ball! The chef is playing homage to the ingredients but wants you to enjoy it, not worship it.
