I've come to the Otsu port specifically to try the Ankou fish, so I've ordered everything from their menu: Dobujiru (Ankou Nabe without added stock), Ankou sashimi, and Karaage. Also ordered their premium (Matsu) sashimi set to try their other fishes.
I like everything I've ordered but I am especially by the Ankou Karaage! The Dobujiru is absolutely delicious (made with 3 different type of miso and tons Ankou's liver and nothing else) but I can barely taste the meat inside the super flavourful hotpot. Ankou sashimi has a nice texture (also some with their liver) but not as nice as the Fuku that came with my sashimi set (been told later that summer has been especially long this year and might affect the Ankou quality.)
But the Karrake is super nice! The skin became light and very crispy, the meat is super flavourful and dirt cheap! I've ordered it by accident thinking that it's some sort of appetiser (only around 800 JYP) but they actually give you the entire fish minus the liver. If anything it reminds me of a deep fried frog but with a lot less bones and more flavour.
Sashimi-wise I enjoy Fuku and Nodoguro/Akamutsu (Blackthroat Seaperch/Rosy Seabass) the most, definitely a step above everything else I've tried in the sashimi set (that said, they are all very delicious and reasonably priced)
They have an e-menu which you can ordered from their tablets. They said it also has the English version but only a few in the menu itmes has English translation. Everything came with a photo though so it's not too hard to order.
The service is very good, I speak a little Japanese so I enjoy having a few chat with their staff but even when there's a thing I just don't understand, the chef himself came out and use Google translated to communicate what necessary (I've ordered a Dojuburi and trying to order some rice to make a porridge and they've said something about this can't be done - only for me to realise after a few Google translation that the rice is included in the set and that's how we're supposed to eat the hotpot)
So, even with limited English, I am sure you won't have a hard time. I myself enjoy my time...
ย ย ย Read moreTL;DR: delicious food, pleasant owner, more than reasonable prices. We stopped here for dinner to eat anglerfish, a specialty from the Ibaraki prefecture. We tried it fried, which was delicious, but the best variation was definitely the sashimi. Anglerfish can only be served as sashimi when it is extremely fresh, and this is one of the few shops in the whole country which is able to do that, since the lovely owner, as he explained to us while chatting between dishes, personally goes to the fish market every morning (or rather, night) to get just-caught fish to serve on that day. We also tried the grilled blowfish and the arajiru soup, both absolutely delicious. After eating all those delicacies, we were surprised at the more than reasonable price. If you happen to be in Ibaraki, definitely...
ย ย ย Read moreI planned a visit to teamLab: Hidden Traces of Rice Terraces Hot Spring - Izura, thatโs why I looked to find nearby local restaurant that serves local cuisine. I booked on Tabelog and deposit was needed. The fish hotpot is a local dish and I was recommended to add congee on the end. The food there was awesome and amazing good deal. They have a menu with big variety of food from deep-fried food to fresh sashimi including their specialty fresh lobster sashimi. High recommended to come and drop by to support local friendly store. Google translate helps communication. iPad ordering is available so can order by looking at pictures! Definitely...
