Without a doubt, this is some of the best pizza you’ll find in Japan. My wife and I visited during our trip to Kyoto, craving a change of pace from Japanese cuisine, and we were thrilled by the experience. The highlight of our meal was the pistacchio e salsiccia pizza—a delicious surprise! Having tried different pistachio-based pizzas before, I was genuinely impressed by the quality of the ingredients here. It was clear the pizzaiolo had honed his craft in Italy, mastering the art of traditional Neapolitan pizza-making. Bravo!
The pizzas are generously sized—refreshingly different from many Japanese pizzerias where portions tend to be smaller. Each ingredient tasted fresh and authentic, while the wood-fired oven added that unmistakable flavor that completes a perfect pizza.
Beyond the food, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a cozy ambiance that made us feel right at home. The staff were genuinely friendly and attentive, enhancing the entire experience.

My (now) husband and I had our first date here for lunch, and it’s been a favorite of ours ever since. We’re now regulars. My go-to is the Capricciosa pizza—absolutely delicious! When it comes to dessert, it’s always a tough choice between the tiramisu and the Nutella strawberry pizza. Both are amazing, and I highly recommend trying them.

Read moreWe did not expect to find a pizzeria with this level of quality in Japan. Being from the Netherlands but frequently visiting Italy, we think we know what good pizza is. And at Pizzeria del Popolo a Kyoto the pizza is very good! Thin crust, tasty toppings and amazing tomato sauce. Add this to a wood-fired stone oven: bellissima! Good beer and Aperol Spritz, served with Italian taralli as well! It does not come as a surprise that the owner has been to Naples to learn about the art of pizza and...
