Springbank — Restaurant in Matsumoto

2 of us visited in January 2024 (winter). Our guesthouse helped call to make a reservation beforehand and dropped us off there for dinner and drinks. For context, the only Japanese both of us could speak were the common phrases like ‘hello’ ‘polite’ ‘thank you’ and ‘can I make payment please’. We really enjoyed the food and drink - we had a hamburger steak and sirloin steak and had a couple of cocktails and a whisky. The gin and tonic and White Russian were delicious.

Contrary to other reviews here, we both thought that the service was good - the staff member was attentive in taking our orders and the food didn’t take long to arrive. I really wonder what the reviewers who said that ‘the place was unwelcoming to tourists’ even expected from the staff. We didn’t expect more than what we experienced and we were very happy with our visit.

Delicious western style meal and excellent gin and tonics. A nice change to eat familiar food after lots of mountain soba and katsu pork. We enjoyed the sirloin steak, pasta, beef stew and hamburger steak. The meals came with a complimentary ham and pickled veggies like eggplant, zucchini and squash, which was a lovely touch. Meals were also served with garden salad which was nice and fresh. Service was great after initial awkwardness because we brought a toddler and some teenagers to a bar. The man who served us quite fluent in English and professional. Only request would be a little bit more music to help with...

We came here for dinner because there were no places open around 7.30pm although we know they had bad review about their bar tender’s attitude.

When we walk in they greet us(not overly friendly but still ok) and they have “English” menu now. I had fried rice (taste normal), my hubby had Hamburg rice (not bad). Price is average compare to the price...
