Perched on the side of route 325 from Kumamoto to Miyazaki. It sells live river trout of all sizes from freshwater tanks. You step inside to be greeted with a traditional hearth where baby fish are being slow grilled over binchotan. Sit in or out on the terrace that overlooks lushly forested mountains.
I ordered the big boy set. Three whole trout done tempura, salt grilled and miso grilled. All incredible, flesh bones & guts, every last bite. Tempura the standout of the three, so crisp even sitting in gravy. Great pickles and a kinda trout jerky kinpira. Trout miso soup, veggies and rice of course. To top it all trout sashimi was stunning too. All this for 1700¥ about £12. The udon and trout fillet tempura was 900¥. Making it the best value meal of the trip...
