If I was able to give this hotel and restaurant 6 stars I would. Starting with the hotel aspect, this place is one of the most comfortable relaxing places we've stayed, even when compared to other 5 star hotels in Japan and Europe. The finishes in all of the rooms were expertly done with such a beautiful focus on immersing yourself in the nature and serenity all around you. It may be further from the main town, but it is because of that distance that it is able to showcase everything which makes the Hida region so special. For days you do want to go to town or the train station they offer a very nice shuttle service that can take you there and back. You have your own toilet in the room, and there are private showers which are shared between the guests with a very relaxing environment and beautiful tub, and although it was quite foreign coming from America, I wouldn't have it any other way.

The restaurant portion was amazing in every single way. After eating at Michelin star restaurants throughout Europe, I can easily say that this restaurant surpasses everything those places try to do. Every dish appears to be so effortlessly crafted, but every bite showcases the deep intricate understanding of flavors behind it all. Every single dish was beautifully presented and memorable to the point we had dinner two days in a row there and somehow were able to enjoy a completely different menu on back to back days which is unheard of in the restaurant industry in America. Breakfast was simple, nutritious and delicious. I can not rave enough about the chef and the entire family team at Auberge Hida No Mori. They all were so welcoming and kind, and this stay was easily one of our favorites during our 6 week trip throughout many of Japan's towns and cities. I wish we had more time to spend lounging and enjoying the atmosphere they have set up at Auberge! It is exactly what every 5 star hotel and Michelin star restaurant strives to do and Auberge Hida No Mori executes it so...

What an absolutely amazing property. Everything about this hotel is thought out and intentional, from the entrance to the lobby, the food to the music they play. This is the best of Japanese hospitality with western comforts. The property is very minimalistic in the best way possible. It is modern danish meets Japanese style set in a beautiful and quiet area outside of town. If your looking for a place to rest and get away from the craziness Japan can be... This is it! Don't be turned off by the lack of shower in the rooms. Each room has a private toilet and sink. Yes, the showers are shared but think of it as a private onsen. There are two showers rooms. Each one is private and lockable and suitable for 2 people so you can shower with your partner. There is a changing area and wet room that has two separate shower heads and a beautiful wooden hot tub. It was an amazing and relaxing experience, not at all a downside. The rooms are very simple but clean and comfortable with western style beds. The hotel is located outside of the city but the hotel has luxury vans and is willing to shuttle you. Let me also say the food is AMAZING. Meals are served at set times and worth taking a part of. Meals are western style and delicious. My wife and I are foodies and have eaten at some of the best restaurants around the world and trust me when I say the coursed dinner was michelen star worthy! It was so good we ate there twice. Lastly the owners that run the property are absolutely delightful their service is 5 star, this is their home and they make you feel as their special guests. Do not hesitate in booking this hotel. It will be one of the highlights of your...

Lovely hotel set in a forest on the outskirts of Takayama. Very comfortable rooms, 3 private onsens and good common areas for relaxing. The included breakfast is “best ever” but we highly recommend opting to stay in for dinner set at least once as the food is amazing - italian with japanese twists. Lots of variety, good ingredients and delicious. Not too much and not too little. Excellent value for ¥5000. A very good wine list as well. But as is often the case it is the people who make the experience worthwhile. Toshi and his extended family are very friendly, very helpful and totally professional. English is not an issue at all. Do not worry about not having a private bathroom as there is absolute privacy. And do not worry about the location as you can get a lift to or from town at any time. In any case, it is much nicer staying outside of the town and only 10 minutes from the station. And there are plenty of lovely things to do. We did the walk that starts just near the hotel. A bit of an effort but quite beautiful. And the Satoyama Experience bike ride in nearby Hida was excellent.i

I don't even know where to begin. I only wish I could give this accommodation more than 5 stars to reflect the experience I had. First of all, the ambience resembles an upscale but homey mountain lodge, fitting for a getaway in Takayama. The service was spectacular, from the shuttle service which was easy to arrange and always available, to the kind staff who were always willing to help. I did a solo trip here and felt so comfortable. But the biggest shock of all was the phenomenal food. It was a course menu, with each dish somehow better than the last. The creativity of the flavor profile and quality of the food blew me away as a guest from New York City. I ate dinner here 2 out of 3 nights and honestly would have been happy eating here a 3rd time. Thank you to all the staff here and I cannot wait to come back to Takayama and stay at Auberge Hida no Mori
