We came here for dinner, stayed a night and had their breakfast.
Dinner: All the dishes were very well thought through and executed, noteworthy dishes were the anikimo brioche (YUM and super flavourful!), shirako springrolls (very nice texture but the fried springroll might've overpowered the shirako flavour, beef and leek pasta (it's a childhood favourite but in a pasta form) and the chestnut montblanc (very well balanced but a tad bit too sweet) The meat bun the most average dish imo but maybe you can't do more than a normal meat bun
Room: simple wooden rooms but very carefully design and decorated - the owners paid attention to every detail (including nice coffee drips and kettles, soft cotton pajamas, toiletries where they should be) to create a home feel! If the bathtub is bigger and toilet with better drainage it would've been perfect
Breakfast: served traditional breakfast and surprisingly it's a highlight too! Our favourite was the deer meat with red wine reduction (gosh it's so flavourful and tender, i need to learn). It also came with other food you would expect from a Japanese breakfast table (like ryokans served) but better - shall i say the apple crumble with ice cream as dessert was very very delicious (although too much guilty pleasure as a morning delight)
All in all - 100% thoroughly enjoyed the evening with 2 very full meals, with the price we paid, I feel it was worth it if you want to try it for the experience.
PS love the family run restaurant vibe with the young son (10 YO) helping to...
Read moreIf you expect polite service, I strongly recommend not going here. It was the first time I have ever experienced such rude treatment in Japan.
I called your restaurant earlier. Before, I had said, “I will check with my friend from overseas about the reservation on August 3, and contact you again.” So after confirming with my friend, I called again today as a matter of courtesy to ask for the reservation on August 3.
However, before I could even talk about the reservation, the owner suddenly said, “You’re the person who complained about the reservation website, right?” And then added, “If you have so many complaints, you don’t need to make a reservation anymore.”
I only wanted to explain that the reservation website was a little hard to understand and that I was confused. I never meant to complain.
I was really looking forward to visiting your restaurant, so this kind of response made me very disappointed and sad. As a Japanese person, I feel truly sorry that something like this happened and that such an experience...
Read moreThis is a small operation and the Murai couple work hard to make a wonderful and welcoming experience for guests. Nice rural setting, bunch of farms all around which means there are great ingredients to use. There are two overnight guestrooms, very comfortable and nicely appointed, chic amenities. Both guestrooms have full bath and a separate sitting table/area. No wifi, cell service was fine. The window shades are neat, they are behind the inside window glass and there is another glass behind that. Maybe it helps keep out cold air and noise, tho there isn't that much traffic that goes by. The food volume for dinner and breakfast are enormous with lots of courses and variety. There were interesting dish combos (e.g. ricotta cheese in seaweed soup) and great pickled items. A bear-shaped monaka ice cream sandwich to end breakfast was a fun surprise. Really fun place to stay and couple of the best meals we've ever had. Look forward to visiting again. Short drive to Nikka distillery...
