Visited in December 2024. Laos. Vientiane.

Having heard much about Restaurant Privet, a beacon of Russian cuisine in Laos, we were delighted to experience a taste of home so far from its origins. The restaurant's décor is charming and inviting, featuring high-quality tables and chairs alongside various nods to Russian culture. The multiple dining rooms offer ample seating capacity.

The Food:

The extensive menu encompasses a wide array of appetizers, main courses, and salads, all prepared à la minute—a double-edged sword, offering guaranteed freshness but potentially resulting in longer wait times. We began with blini served with sour cream and red caviar. The blini were perfectly executed—delicate, lacy, and boasting a perfect balance of salt and sugar. Next, we sampled the classic Russian herring under a fur coat salad. While delicious, the salad was slightly watery due to the boiled vegetables, and a more generous portion of herring would have been welcome. Despite this minor quibble, the dish was thoroughly enjoyable. The syrniki (cottage cheese pancakes) were a delightful dessert; the cottage cheese was subtly sweet, possessing a pleasingly firm texture, and the combination with sour cream and berry jam was superb. This is, in fact, our second visit, and previous experiences with dishes such as Chicken Kiev, borscht, and garlic-stuffed tomatoes have been similarly positive.

Service:

The service was friendly and attentive; our server, who appeared to be the manager, provided helpful recommendations and guidance in navigating the menu. While the wait times for dishes were somewhat lengthy, this is entirely understandable given the restaurant's commitment to preparing everything fresh.

Conclusion:

Restaurant Privet is a truly excellent example of Russian cuisine, arguably the best in Asia. The flavors are authentic and consistently well-executed—a rarity given the challenges of sourcing authentic ingredients abroad. If you are craving familiar tastes or seeking an introduction to traditional Russian food, this is the place to visit. Highly...

This restaurant was an amazing find for us, especially since we were missing Russian cuisine. We ordered delivery via WhatsApp, and everything was prepared quickly and delivered hot. Each dish we tried was absolutely delicious and brought back warm memories of home. It's also a great value for money, making it even more worthwhile.

We haven’t tried everything on the menu yet, but some of our favorites were the mixed salo plate, the salmon soup (Ukha), and the beefstroganoff with buckwheat. The owner is very kind and included a few freebies with each order, which was a lovely and thoughtful gesture.

We’ll definitely be ordering from here again on our next trip...
