Macrina Fish Shop — Restaurant in Melbourne

Ok, so we searched for a menu online to make a phone order, finally found one in the images on their facebook page, we chose a Fisherman's basket as we had a couple of friends coming over for a casual evening. The meal advertised was: 2 x pieces of flake, 2 x prawns, 2 x scallops, 4 x calamari, 2 x seafood sticks, 2 x fish bites, & chips, it was advertised on their facebook page for $36, reasonable I thought, when I called I was told it was $45, no explanation given even though I said it was $36 on their facebook page, we were hungry people so I ordered anyway. We drove and collected, brought it home, our friends had already arrived, so we opened up the bounty... and the utter disappointment on everyones faces as they took their first bite, dry, overcooked, oily, over battered, the 'calamari' was just strips of squid in thick batter, inedible and just plain awful, it all went in the bin and I whipped up pasta instead. A local fish and chip shop, tucked away in a side street. Dropped by because the kids craved fish and chips.

Without diving into too many specifics, this is your typical suburban fish and chip shop.

Service from the owners were exemplary. Attentive and pleasant. Friendly and not obtrusive. It was quite efficient service overall compared to other places.

The chips were nice - didn't have that radioactive yellow tinge to it. The flake was great - encased in a nice and perfect crush with the right level of crunchiness. Fried dim sin is fried dim sum - hard to get wrong. And potato cake was a little bit undercooked. Overall, the food was on par, if not slightly better, than other fish and chip shops.

The decor is unpretentious and worn, suggesting that it has been around forever. Could do with some music because it can be quite quiet sometime. But let's be honest, it's as basic as it gets.

Will I be back. Yep. I sure will if I need...

this is one of the best fish and chips shops i have been to in a very long time. fish and chips isn’t my go to meal as i have grown up but this shop brought back the tastiness and love for the meal that i experienced as a kid.

the food and batter was cooked perfectly, and the amount of oil was not excessive, making the food light and very tasty. the potato cakes were amazing i even went back in for a second serving.

the service was amazing and the staff were very polite. there was lots of area to sit, even outside which was great as the sun went down.

i will be coming back to this fish and chips shop because i truly had a great experience....
