I can't recommend this little gem of a place enough. From the moment I approached the doorway, I was greeted most lovingly by the Matriarch of the family run business, Kak Lin.
We proceeded to each order a different type of fish for our asam pedas, and each set comes with vegetables, salted eggs and salted fish... Along with a jug of refreshingly ice cold rose syrup drink.
Important Notice It would be a bloody crime if you do not order the cekodok pisang(Mashed Banana Fritters) to nibble on while waiting for your food to arrive. They were joyously crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The banana flavour was not diluted at all.
It is obvious that the family that runs this establishment takes great pride in ensuring that the place has a homely feel. It is truly evident in the way they talk to, and treat their customers.
There are biscuits you can nibble on for free, but just like a true Matriarch, I was reminded that the only rule is,
Finally getting to the star of the show, the Asam Pedas was an absolute delight to devour. It reminded me of my own mum's asam pedas and it made me miss her very much.
All in all, in conclusion, if you like Asam Pedas and you're looking for a place that feels like home, you would be crazy not to venture out to Kantin Asam Pedas.
If you don't like the warm fuzzy feeling of a place that feels like home and amazingly good food. Give it a...
Read moreIt’s been a few months since my husband introduced this restaurant to me. It has now become one of our favourite places to have a simple but delicious early lunch. Ok let’s start from the beginning. Firstly parking is limited and please check peak hours so you don’t have to drive around looking for a place to park. Also if you are a large group please make a reservation. This restaurant is delightfully rustic and filled with antiques and memorabilia from a bygone era. One that invokes a feeling of warm nostalgia. Small and cosy, seating is limited. Service is warm, familiar and friendly. As the Assam Pedas is cooked as it is ordered, be prepared to wait for bit. The menu is simple…Assam Pedas of many different types. Tetel, kepala ikan merah, mahyong roe besides others. They also have fried chicken and fish and omelette. Sets include ulam, sambal belacan, telur asin, ikan kering and air sirap. Desserts are cokodok pisang (some of the best I’ve ever had) and kueh bom with fillings of coconut and kacang hijau. Talk about “kampung fare”. The Assam Pedas is so good and so well done. My advice is to call ahead and book and order as well so that you can come in and not have to wait. The proprietor Lyn and her chef husband are dynamic, warm couple who make you feel welcomed. Together with their daughter and staff they make you feel right at home in no time. Thought of keeping this lovely place a secret but it just doesn’t seem fair....
