First up, the food is AMAZING. Highly recommended if you're looking for authentic local food and fresh seafood.
Food:- Ordered 4 dishes - ikan bakar dua benua (2 flavour grilled fish), kupang masak lemak (clams in coconut milk turmeric sauce), sambal udang (chilli prawns), and ulam (mixed raw vegetables with sambal belacan dip).
The kupang masak lemak was our favourite. The sauce was deliciously flavourful, fragrant, and rich, and we ate every drop of it with rice. We added on another bowl of rice because the sauce was honestly addictive.
The sambal prawns were also excellent and the spiciness was just right and very acceptable even for ones unused to spicy food. The prawns themselves were fresh and cooked to perfection.
The fish was a unique one and we were told by the operator that it was a local fish, a sea trout (although we couldn't verify this). Still, the flesh was nice and firm with a sweetness that is only present in high quality and fresh fish. We preferred the chilli side of the fish as the yellow side was supposedly "buttermilk" but tasted more like Margarine instead (which is more common in Malay food). Even so, it didn't take away from the tastiness of the dish.
Finally, the ulam dipping sauce had a beautiful blend of spiciness, fragrance, and tanginess that elevated simple raw vegetables to a tasty dish.
Total cost of our food was around RM 116 for 2 people.
Service:- The proprietors were nice and welcoming, recommending their best dishes and even giving us a variety of locations to have our meal. Ordering and paying for the meal is done before being served and that process was smooth. Servers were polite and were happy to cater to all our needs. Food was served within 10 minutes, and they arrived all at once.
Ambience:- It has an authentic Malay vibe to the space, from the music to the mainly wooden furniture. The space overlooks paddy fields too, which allows it to have a consistent breeze. We were given a few dining options; regular tables, small pondok styled tables (low tables sitting on the floor), and an upstairs section. We had our meal upstairs where it was nice and windy despite it being 1pm in the afternoon.
DO NOT miss this restaurant if you're visiting Langkawi. Even as a Malaysian, this level of Malay cuisine is hard to come by. This is a must visit every time we come back to...
Read moreThis is one place we want to try during this visit after seeing them on YouTube and reading reviews on Google Maps.
Our first impression when we arrived was “oh… so many people” and after making our order “let’s prepare for a delay in food arrival”. To our surprise, even though it looks like a few tables still have not received their orders, it was not long that we got ours (the others get theirs too).
The place is overlooking paddy fields and at noon surely it will be hot and humid, but the wind helps. At the dangau, there are also fans installed and that also helps to reduce the heat. They also put a nice mengkuang ceiling under the roof and on top of the roof, it is covered with daun nipah which helps to reduce heat from the sun. The daun nipah also gives an authentic look of a dangau at paddy fields.
Ordering food is easy as they already have menus for you to choose from. And if you fancy having seafood, they also have fresh seafood for selection and you choose the type of cooking when ordering. Pay before you are given a table. Various types of seating from tables and chairs or you can sit and have your food the Malay style.
There is a group performing live traditional music to accompany your meals. As I said earlier, food arrived reasonably fast considering the number of people at that time. I think it was less than 20 minutes after we got our drinks served.
Nasi Sup Daging is the option if you want to have gravy other than the usual Tom Yam. The Kailan Ikan Masin was not salty enough, but that is quite okay. Sotong Goreng properly cooked and does not taste gummy. Ikan Bakar Dua Benua was a bit sweet on the salted egg part. The ulam was great and I hope they can get supplies regularly. I think Ulam Pegaga was missing from the serving.
The only challenge is the route to this place. It is in the middle of a paddy field and the road is narrow. Be patient when you have other cars coming from opposite directions. You may need to wait until they pass at certain parts...
Read moreDear Dangau Restaurant Team,
I am writing to share my recent experience at your restaurant, which unfortunately was far below expectations. While the ambiance was pleasant, there were several aspects of our visit that left us disappointed.
The food was average, but it was the service that truly let us down. After we were seated and served our meals, the staff placed a reserved tag on our table. When we asked about it, we were told the table was reserved for VIP guests arriving in 30 minutes. While I understand that reservations are important, the manner in which this was handled was inconsiderate and disrespectful. So naturally, we were expected to hurry up and eat. How considerate of you to give us such a heads-up!
What really made the experience special, though, was the ‘lack of empathy’ from the staff. We were dining with our two sons, and instead of a little kindness or understanding, we were treated like we had overstayed our welcome. The suggestion that the table was reserved for VIPs felt discriminatory. It was hurtful, especially as a paying guest, to feel as though we were being treated as less important than others.
In all seriousness, I’ve never experienced anything like this before, and I sincerely hope this level of discrimination isn’t a standard practice at your restaurant. It’s one thing to have VIP reservations, but to make other guests feel less than is something else entirely.
Thanks for the ‘memorable experience’, and I hope you consider adjusting the way you treat all customers in the future.
Best regards, Just a humble local...
