They truly only open for business at 1700hrs. We were there early at 1645hrs, and they asked us to wait a while.
As we were their 1st customers, the lady was nice to go through what they have (don't think they have a menu). We ordered chicken for 2 pax, a bowl of kuey teow soup, meat balls, and a plate of taugeh.
The chicken - poached and drizzled with premium soy sauce and garnished with scallions and cucumber. As the whole chicken is smallish, each piece of cut chicken size is small, but the meat live up to Ipoh standard, i.e. must be smooth and tender.
The taugeh - need not to comment as any taugeh in Ipoh has that standard. Guess if anyone serves other types of taugeh, they will get scolded. The only difference is how long the taugeh are blanched and their respective signature sauce to make the difference to be better than the next. Here, they did it well as expected.
The kuey teow soup - the noodle texture is smooth as expected, but the soup is a tad too sweet; to the extent, it tasted not real. Just puzzled why the taste is as such, as they need not use any msg or flavour enhancer, etc. (suspect that they do that). In view of the amount of chicken they have to poach, the soup base should be tasty enough without further enhancement.
Meat ball - just ordinary and nothing to shout about.
Verdict: Probably it is our expectation that they should be better than the touristy locations e.g. Lou Wong, or Onn Kee and the likes, but we could not attest or support this expectation.
In our opinion, at best they can only match the touristy ones. We are not saying it is not nice, it's ok, especially if you are in Buntong. Otherwise, one need not come all the way to Buntong to have the Ipoh famed taugeh chicken. Those downtown, touristy ones are good enough.
Thus, will we return to Buntong to have this Ipoh famed dish? No, we will not, as we will just have those downtown ones to save...
Read moreI found this place by searching around the internet for recommendation. Admittedly I should have been more diligent in reading the reviews before trusting the hype that this place has.
We went there at 7.30pm on a Sunday. We thought it was not crowded, but we were utterly wrong. We were lucky to get a table after just a few minutes wait, but little did we know that was just the beginning.
We placed our order and we had to wait 1 hour to get the first dish: a simple meatball soup. Then after another 20 minutes or so, the beansprout and chicken arrived, along with the rice. Yea, we were expected to eat the meatballs without any rice.
To be honest, the dishes were average, though I'm not from Ipoh so I'm not sure what to expect. What REALLY ticked us off is that one of the chefs seemed to be literally taking his sweet time to prepare the chicken while the other younger chef worked his * off rushing out the dishes. They had many waitresses but still for some reason the young chef had to do everything from preparing to serving. The older chef kept drifting off when working. In fact, he worked so slow that by the time he finished one chicken, the younger chef had finished 4. Perhaps he's a newcomer?
Anyway, a 60 minutes wait is totally not worth it. I'll not be returning for a...
Read moreIf you're looking for authentic and delicious bean sprout chicken in Ipoh, Buntong Bean Sprout Chicken is definitely the place to go! The chicken is perfectly cooked – tender, juicy, and flavourful. The bean sprouts are fresh, crunchy, and taste amazing with their signature sauce.
The portion sizes are generous, and the prices are very reasonable. I also loved their silky smooth hor fun noodles, which go so well with the chicken and bean sprouts. It's a simple dish but done so perfectly that it feels like comfort food.
The service is friendly and efficient, and the restaurant is clean and comfortable, even during busy times. You can really tell they put effort into maintaining the quality of their food and service.
Whether you're a local or visiting Ipoh, Buntong Bean Sprout Chicken is a must-try! I can’t wait to...
