Food Review: A Hearty Traditional Meal
I recently had the pleasure of trying a traditional dish at Restoran Selera Kebun, and it was a delightful experience that brought together rich flavors and comforting textures.
The meal was beautifully presented on a banana leaf, adding an authentic touch to the dining experience. The rice, a mix of white and black grains, was cooked to perfection—soft, yet with enough bite to make each mouthful satisfying. Accompanying the rice was a vibrant array of fresh vegetables, including crisp lettuce, cucumber slices, and a slice of juicy tomato, providing a refreshing contrast to the more robust flavors of the dish.
The star of the meal was undoubtedly the Gulai / curry. The thick, golden broth was rich and aromatic, infused with spices that danced on the palate without overwhelming it. The chicken drumstick was tender and well-cooked, absorbing the flavors of the curry beautifully. There was also a piece of meat submerged in the curry, adding extra depth to the dish. On the side, the keropok (crackers) provided a delightful crunch, balancing the soft textures of the rice and curry.
The meal also included a small portion of sambal, which was both sweet and tangy, enhancing the overall flavor profile. However, the soup served in the bright orange bowl, while flavorful, didn’t quite stand out against the more intense flavors of the curry and sambal.
Overall, this meal was a satisfying and hearty experience. The use of fresh ingredients, combined with the rich, spiced curry, made for a memorable dish that truly showcased the essence of traditional cuisine. However, for a more balanced experience, the soup could have been more distinctive in flavor.

Read moreI was already told to not have high expectations on food in Kundasang. On my last day here, I chanced upon this restaurant on google maps and decided to give it a try as my husband and I were looking for more local food to explore.
We went in with not too hungry tummies, tired from the day’s activities. Ordered the 2 types of Linopot as that looks most interesting + a side of veg after looking at good reviews here.
Verdict: MINDBLOWN with flavours. It has good smokey flavour in the meats and even the soup. The Sayur Kampung was just one of the best veg dish I ever tasted and can just eat that with plain rice. Presentation to flavours was just A+++. Everything was beyond expectations and more. We even thought that we would come back to Kundasang just to eat this again. Maybe we have not had other Sabahan food but this was just really good for us.
Definitely highly recommended. Every elements were fresh and works so well together.
