Maybe you can tell the extent of a chef's culinary skill if they are able to cook flavoursome vegetables! So my review is only based on eating vegetable tempura, chawanmushi, miso soup, rice, agedashi tofu and pickles...
I suspect for sashimi /cut raw seafood this restaurant is probably very suitable. For me however there was a distinctly bland and lack of seasoning going on :(. The tempura sauce was more like a clear vegetable soup than a sauce, the agedashi tofu soup/sauce was only marginally better. I am not sure if I was expected to self season everything with soy sauce? It would hv been nice to have some other condiments on the table to do so eg chilli flakes...The chawanmushi was filled with black bits not sure if it was flavourless cracked pepper but at least not burnt garlic. The flavour was not good at all. I wanted to like this restaurant but it was really lacking in the flavour department for me. The miso soup was probably the best part of my meal but it was v v thick and salty. The vege tempura was fried ok but could have been better drained and like almost everything seasoned w a small pinch of salt to bring out the natural flavours of the vegetables etc better. I have eaten quite a lot of such Japanese food in and out of Japan so I know that there can still be a lot of flavour achieved even in such simple dishes...
The space is nice and calm and quiet with relaxing music going on. They had...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant, and I have to say, their ZEITAKU-Kaisen Don is absolutely to die for. It’s one of those dishes you take a bite of and instantly know you’ll be coming back for more.
The don is beautifully presented, featuring an impressive selection of fresh sashimi including tuna, salmon, and more, topped with a fresh sea prawn tempura that adds the perfect crunchy contrast to the soft, delicate fish. Every ingredient felt premium, from the buttery sashimi slices to the creamy avocado and crunchy vegetables layered over seasoned rice. The wasabi on the side provided just the right kick without overpowering the natural sweetness of the seafood.
To end the meal, I tried their homemade matcha ice cream topped with red bean paste, and it was an absolute delight. The ice cream had a rich and earthy matcha flavor with a smooth, creamy texture, perfectly complemented by the sweet and slightly nutty red beans. It’s refreshing, not too sweet, and feels authentically Japanese.
Overall, this place offers a memorable Japanese dining experience with high-quality ingredients and thoughtful presentation. Whether you’re a sashimi lover or just looking for something special, the ZEITAKU-Kaisen Don alone makes this place worth visiting – and the matcha ice cream is the perfect way to wrap up your meal. Highly...
Read moreVisited on a weekday night, pretty close to their closing time at 8:30 PM. The restaurant is located on the upper floor and can only be reached by a long staircase, which might be challenging for elderly guests or people with mobility issues.
The place itself is simple and unpretentious - nothing fancy. I was expecting a more upscale decor, but it has a laid-back vibe. The staff were polite and friendly, though we didn’t hear irasshaimashe from the kitchen when we walked in.
The food was quite good overall. I appreciated that the spicy tuna maki was made with real, fresh fish. The garlic fried rice was tasty, though I personally would have liked a stronger garlic flavour and less of the slight bitterness from burnt garlic.
We were served complimentary miso soup, which was a nice touch. The RM 10 (June 2025) chawanmushi was quite good and generously filled. The RM 1 hot green tea, was refilled frequently throughout our meal.
As others have mentioned, service can be a little slow, but I don’t mind waiting if the food is good. There were only us and another table of 6 during our visit. They also offer an omakase menu, which we’re thinking of trying on...
