I haven’t been back to Terengganu (where I grew up) for a while now since both my mother and grandmother whom I grew up with passed away. What’s a home when your loved ones are gone right. Today after more than a year since I last came back, I got the chance to come ‘home’ again due to family matters. Yes, I did not even return for Eid this year as I felt there wasn’t much of a home to go back to anymore. When my plane landed this morning at Sultan Mahmud Airport, off I drove by rental car to the infamous Nasi Dagang Atas Tol restaurant located under a bridge in Losong, a neighbourhood well known for its world class fish sausages called ‘keropok lekor’, eaten boiled or fried. I told my sister I’ve been craving for the Nasi Dagang for the longest time, which is the epitome of my hometown’s traditional cuisine. Glutinous rice steamed with coconut milk and served with mackerel tuna cooked in rich spice and chutney. The moment the food reached my palate, I forgot how much I miss the authentic and flavourful taste of the food to the point I teared a little. I grew up eating Nasi Dagang and no copies of the food outside of Terengganu can match the original taste. Suddenly, everything feels like ‘home’ again. My loved ones may be gone and no amount of tears and prayers can bring them back but these are the little memories that I had of them which I treasure forever. Memories of the palate. That is something you take with you wherever you go. You may travel the world but knowing that there’s always ‘home’ to go back to is always comforting to know. As of today, it comforts me to know that whenever I come home again to Terengganu in the future, I know I will always be celebrated by the gastronomical memoirs of my loved ones and that is something I shall treasure for the...
Read moreNo doubt. Every time I go back to my hometown, this will always be on my itinerary. I will make a day to go here for breakfast with mum and my sister's family. Now you have a choice to go NDAT at Hiliran in case NDAT at Atas Tol is packed with people. Or, another one (argh! Forgot where its about 🙏🏻) but still nearby. As for until today, the taste of the food never changes. Aside from nasi dagang, they also have Nasi Kunyit or outsiders called it pulut kuning. Fried mee, the keropok lekor also got. Drinks you should try is the Teh tarik madu. Now they also serve Teh Hijau tarik madu which was my sister's favs. Well, I enjoy my food so, not much of the picture is taken 😂 and yeah, please forget your diet just for this one fine day ❤️ Oh! Before I forget, add you an info where the table assigned system is implemented. You will get your table number at the queue based on how many...
Read moreWhat is the best part of the Nasi Dagang ? I would say the fluffy rice instead of the ikan tongkol (Mackerel). And the best part of the dish is also the boiled eggs with the curry. Take note that the curry comes with chilli padi. So eat with cautious
We did not get to order the ayam berempah due to the customers in front of us(9pax) took all the fried chickens. So was a bit of dissapointed that we didn’t get to order 1 ayam and 1 fish. Chicken sold out on Monday at 9.30am. 🥲
The drinks are deliviously not sweet! We found out that the Teh Peng in Terengganu is not sweet as compared to all the Teh Peng “viral” selling in Penang.
Would easily have this in the morning for breakfast due to the lightness of the food.
Would come again ? Yes to order the nasi dagang ayam...
