For years, my family has visited Luzzu's but tonight was definitely the last night we will ever go there again. We've always known it for it's good service and good food but somehow (in the past 3 years in which we haven't visited Malta), it has deteriorated rapidly.
For a start, the food was awful. We ordered a garlic bread starter that didn't even have an ounce of garlic on it and was instead coated in thick butter (it is easy to understand that it tasted horrendous). Since we ate barely any of the food, we asked the manager to take the starter off of our bill. Instead of simply being polite, he started interrogating us about why we didn't like the food. He was rather aggressive and rude and certainly set a bad tone for the rest of the evening.
Further to the disastrous starter, our mains were similarly poor. Firstly, I was given the wrong pizza which normally I wouldn't mind but after the manager's attitude earlier, I was a tad frustrated. My mother's pizza was the correct order but the dough base was horrendously burnt and the crust was inedible. Even when my pizza finally came, the quality was generally poor and I'd have preferred to have eaten a frozen pizza.
Alongside the poor food and the abhorrent manager's attitude, the waiters / waitresses were very inattentive and seemed to be stressed / overworked. We had to ask to even be given a seat (despite waiting at the entrance) then had to ask a waitress to serve us after 10-15 minutes of sitting unattended. At no point during our meal did anyone come to see if we were enjoying the food or if we would like to order anything else (which one would typically expect from a restaurant).
Overall, the quality of food and service was absolutely appalling and I would advise anyone considering going to Luzzu's to change your mind immediately and go elsewhere; otherwise, you'll leave as...
Read moreFirst the good news, lovely environment and outlook. First drinks served relatively quickly Now the bad: We used to attend this restaurant regularly before it was refurbished. Good food, and service at that time was always good. It has deteriorated considerably . We ordered an Italian platter to share as a starter and seafood spaghetti and a fish dish for mains. We were surprised when diners who arrived and ordered after us were served their oven baked pastas! Surely a platter could not take longer than a meal cooked from scratch? We had to issue a reminder. When it arrived we then had to ask for plates and for butter. We never did did get oil and balsamic as by this time i was starting to feel awkward. Platter was lovely though. We finished our drinks but no one came to ask if we needed more. Spaghetti was ok but with lots of chopped mint and emptyshells. Some of the fish had fallen into the sauce but 2 razor clam shells and only 1 'razor clam? I had no dish to put the empty shells in and resorted to using the bowl which had held the butter portions. Fish dish was awful.(name of fish began with M and was steamed)Scales had not been removed from the skin and so had mixed with the fish. This could not be eaten. Manager did remove price from our bill. It is unfortunate as this restaurant is in an ideal location but appears to relying on the view. I'm not sure if the staff thought we were tourists so we wouldnt be back but we actually have a home in Malta and eat out regularly. If I do go back it will only be for a platter and the service...
Read moreFirst of all, before I say anything mean, I need to say that the staff was very nice and helpful, hence the two stars. My concern is about the quality of the products and how they try to save a dime on things they shouldn't. the worst desert I've ever had called "mama's dessert" it was supposed to be a nice layer cake with chocolate/hazelnut spread, turned out to be made of cardboard, inedible. I tried it and left it in the plate. the waitress saw that I didn't finish the dessert, very nicely tried to give me something else instead, but if the manager is ok to let such a dessert out of the kitchen, then any desert will be of the same quality there. Obviously it wasn't homemade, obviously they didn't spend more than 20cents/ slice on this frozen "cake". One of my favorite drinks is called Frangelico, it's a hazelnut liqueur pretty rare where I live (Dublin, ireland) so whenever I see some at a restaurant I order a double. Well at Luzzu it was half liqueur half water. (and no it wasn't because of the ice, I've had hundreds, theirs was watered down, no doubt). I don't know what happened when I see the old ratings: I had great expectations, maybe they changed chefs, probably covid hit hard.... but man was I disappointed. to avoid at all cost, you'll waste your money when there's so much better...
