Royale Barrel Bistro Bar — Restaurant in Saint Paul's Bay

Astounding this was a 4.8 review when I went. Food was quite poor. Very low level chain pub standard. Somewhere between Wetherspoons and Beefeater level from the UK.

Waiter forgot to order my main course, he only ordered to the kitchen after my wife and son’s food came out. I actually had to ask the geezer about it 5 mins after my wife and son’s food was delivered for him to remember I’d ordered anything. That should have been the warning sign needed. It came 20 mins later after they had long finished and wasn’t worth the wait.

Waiter offered no compensation for it, and the establishment seemed very surprised at my annoyance when my bill arrived and nothing was knocked off. Eventually I was offered something next time i came. Needless to say, I won’t be going back.

On the plus side - I had a couple of cocktails and they were very good. Limited bar and options of gin and whisky only, but my Boulevardier were very very good. Perhaps the previous patrons who had rated this place highly had drunk so many they didn’t take notice of the food...

I had an amazing experience at Royal Barrel! From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was inviting and vibrant. The cocktails were absolutely fantastic – expertly crafted, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Every sip felt like a treat!

The food was equally impressive – delicious, well-portioned, and clearly made with quality ingredients. Whether you’re there for a light bite or a full meal, the menu offers something for everyone.

After a week in St Paul's Bay, this was genuinely one of the best restaurants in the area, especially due to the great service and tasty food. We felt well taken care of by Samevell and Sofia. From the first moment they were kind, helpful, polite and present exactly the right amount. While some of the other restaurants felt a bit impersonal, in the Royale Barrel Bistro Bar we felt warmly welcome. It was also cleaner and more organised than some of the other places we've visited - my mom thought the restrooms were the cleanest from all the others she's tried. We would recommend the Royale Burger with a pint of lager, and the steak and ale pie was also tasty. We would definitely come back next...
