First let me begin my review by saying that Malaysians live to eat! We were a big group (9) mainly made up of Malaysians who were saying farewell to one of us & wanted her to have a Mauritian Creole meal experience so we chose Escale Creole.
Maybe this restaurant & the way the menu is structured is more suited to smaller groups where each person has their own plate of food. Because we were a big group, of course we wanted to have a taste of everything on the 3 different menus & to her credit, the very kind & friendly hostess tried to make it easy for us to have this experience. But when there are many small plates on the table of different Mauritian dishes, it can get too overwhelming & one can’t tell what is what as they look & taste similar. For example, we had chicken salmi & deer salmi, octopus curry, chicken curry & fish curry, fish vindaye, octopus vindaye, Creole sausage amongst other Mauritian delicacies. Even for me, who has lived here for a very long time, I got confused as I said, because the dishes looked & tasted similar. Malaysians are tough customers when it comes to food & the food was also a little bit too salty for our palates but as the friendly host advised, Creole food is a little bit salty.
The experience starts off with gajaks or little entrees & a drink. Then in addition to our “chosen main menu” we also got rice, lentils, pumpkin, cabbage with poisson sale, achar legume, purée of brinjals for example…From photos on Google maps, you can see the main menu offerings but be aware, depending on which menu, you get to choose between one or two or all four specialities so if you are in a big group, it can be confusing to try & choose which menu to go for, well maybe for me it was confusing as I was overwhelmed trying to make sure everyone got to try different dishes. It would definitely be easier for a group of say 2 or 4 people to each choose their own menu.
For dessert, we each got like 3 deconstructed desserts - fruits, tarts banana & gateau coco I think, with a shot of rum!
All in all, a very nice Mauritian meal experience set out beautifully & colorfully in a beautiful garden setting.
PS only one criticism, we had a quite a bit of food left over & it would have been nice to have been able to take it away but the hostess advised that this was not possible - to avoid food waste, maybe Escale Creole can suggest to their customers to bring their own containers to take away any...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at Escale Creole in Mauritius, and it was truly an unforgettable experience! From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted by the staff, who made us feel like part of the family. The atmosphere is charming and authentically Mauritian, offering a perfect blend of comfort and culture.
The food was absolutely divine – a true celebration of Creole cuisine! Each dish was bursting with flavor and crafted with such care that you could taste the love and tradition in every bite. The rougaille, vindaye, and coconut chutney were particular highlights, but honestly, everything we tried was exceptional.
What truly sets Escale Creole apart is the personal touch – the staff’s passion for sharing their culinary heritage shines through in every interaction. They were more than happy to explain the origins of the dishes and even share a few cooking tips!
If you’re looking for an authentic Mauritian dining experience with incredible food, wonderful hospitality, and a welcoming atmosphere, Escale Creole is an...
Read moreWhat an experience! I truly felt like I had a taste of Mauritius at this place, highly recommend it. You will need to book in advance but it is worth it. The dishes we had were like comfort food, but the flavours were unreal. There are a limited number of dishes to choose from, which I think is good as they can concentrate on maximising flavour for each dish. Snacks are complimentary, and tasted amazing! We were given something similar to a Bombay mix, banana chips and fried fritters. For the mains, we had a range of stews and curries, mainly containing fish and chicken, but also had some vegetarian sides consisting of kidney beans, lentils and other veggies. We were stuffed after the mains, but we made space for dessert! We were given Banana Tart, some sort of flapjack and papaya covered in syrup. I have to say, this was the perfect end to the meal. The people serving us were a delight, and felt so grateful for them sharing their stories. If you want to experience authentic Mauritian cuisine, this is the...
