El Gym — Restaurant in Oaxaca

Review from a chef - El Gym is an absolutely fantastic restaurant, serving gorgeously coated wings, unbelievable bbq ribs, burgers and fried chicken. The quality of the food far supersedes the roadside plastic chairs, which actually make it a very fun and memorable place to visit.

The service is so welcoming, we were served by “Tonio” who was one of the friendliest, most patient and attentive waiters I’ve had in Mexico. Absolute credit to him. Our Spanish is poor, and he took time to communicate the options, and seemed genuinely passionate.

The food is genuinely phenomenal, it’s fresh, incredibly well cooked and ridiculously tasty. I’ve been thinking about it every day since.

The sauces on the wings are very well balanced, and there’s a good amount of meat on the bone that’s cooked to perfection. The flavour comes from the grill they use, which you can smell when driving down the road. The Kentucky fried chicken was well cooked but juicy, with a beautifully seasoned dredge.

Overall, the level of cooking technique displayed here is genuinely impressive, as the dishes being cooked are hard to perfect. Their food is nothing but delicious. Give it a try early in your stay, as I regret not going...

El lugar es cómodo. Pedimos la hamburguesa con tocino (el tocino estaba gigante y muy bueno), la hamburguesa está pequeña pero rica. Pedimos también las fajitas de pollo (que en realidad son chicken tenders porque están fritas), la salsa bbq no es la mejor, sabe a una combinación entre buffalo y bbq, algo raro. Todos estos platillos incluyen papas a la francesa. Desafortunadamente a mi mamá le cayó muuy mal la mayonesa que fue lo único que yo no comí. Al día siguiente vomitó 3 veces, cada una después de que comía algo. Pensamos que estaba echada a perder, sería importante que estén al pendiente de eso ya que siendo un lugar muy caliente esto sucede con facilidad.
