First off, portion size and food freshness and quality were superb.
Now I'd like to address some of the comments from the haters:
There are complaints about under seasoning. In my experience across beach towns in Mexico this is common. What is also presumed by the establishment is that you will condiment with the provided sauces which, in this case, are delicious. I also recommend adding lime to any seafood dish anywhere and a pinch of salt doesn't hurt either. Since the population has a wide range of palate nuance, as a restauranteur it behooves them to under season rather than over season as long as sauces and or seasonings are provided for the customer to season at will.
Pepe's sauces are delicious and there is plenty of salt and lime on hand. Does this defeat the purpose you ask? It's a matter of opinion I suppose and my opinion is that, as mentioned above, the quality and freshness of the fish and other ingredients are on point and their flavors are only elevated by the add-ons.
Regarding the strange atmosphere and vibe of the staff: After talking at length with Pepe, I learned that he used to run his business fueled by drugs and alcohol which he shared with me that he has left in the past. 4 years off of drugs and less time off of alcohol but we went in the day before the restaurant was to celebrate it's 10 year anniversary (also Pepe's birthday) and he was thrilled to be at this stage in life and in business; with a clear head and genuinely concerned about customer satisfaction.
My only issue there had nothing to do with the business itself but with a group of totally non self aware patrons who had spread themselves and their belongings out, on and around all of the seating areas but we're grouped together themselves at one table. Once confronted they consolidated their stuff but it was a bit annoying having to ask them to reel it in, oblivious to the fact that they had totally commandeered a...
Read moreIf you’re in Puerto Escondido and you love tacos, Pepe’s Fish Taco is an absolute must. Yes, it’s a bit out of the way and the setting isn’t postcard-perfect – but trust me, it’s worth every minute of the trip.
Pepe is the heart and soul of this place. He’s incredibly kind, always taking the time to chat with his customers and share his story. In the past ten years, he’s had to move thirteen times. He once had a spot on the main street, but as gentrification drove rents up, he could no longer afford it. Then, a hurricane hit, forcing him to start over yet again. Today, he cooks with the same passion in a more modest location, without ever compromising on quality.
And the quality is outstanding. The tacos are absolutely delicious – flavorful, generous, perfectly seasoned – and very affordable. Special mention goes to the peanut sauce, created by a chef from the Czech Republic, which adds a unique, addictive touch to every bite. You can taste the heart and dedication in every dish.
Tip: take a taxi or scooter to get here, as the way can be a little tricky. But once your plate is in front of you, you’ll completely forget the journey.
In short, Pepe’s Fish Taco is a slice of authenticity and warmth in a fast-changing Puerto Escondido. You’ll come for the flavor, but you’ll return for...

FISH VELA TACO $70 MUST order; such a unique fish flavour, you will not regret. So so so delicious.
CALAMAR TEMPURA TACO $70 calamari was breaded well but fried a bit dry. this was my least favourite out of the four i tried. compared to the fish tacos, the calamari did not have as much of a bite and was dry. the condiments provided were similar to the other tacos with guacamole on the bottom and cabbage with mango on top. pepe’s sauce is also a good pairing to bring some spice.
SHRIMP TACO $70 an amazing taco, cooked well, served with the same condiments and the sauce. A mouthful of flavour.
DORADO TACO $70 delicious and the fish was cooked perfectly. the condiments were also fantastic, pepe added guacamole on the bottom with mangos and cabbage on top. really balanced out and brought to life the taco.
\\ a one man run restaurant, that you cannot miss during your visit to Puerto. this is not a touristy la Punta restaurant, this is a local vibe and more rustic feel. that said, the portions, the price and the flavours are better than some taco joints in la punta. be patient he makes everything from scratch, but it’s most definitely...
