I probably have eaten here 10 times in 12 days, including breakfast and dinner. Cotulla only has three sit down restaurants and this is the only one open on Sundays. Yes, one is help captive to their food scene on an extended stay. Sometimes the food can actually be very good. Most of the time, it hovers at average. Their tortillas are brittle and pretty much flavorless after they get cold, which somehow happens pretty fast! The contents of tacos on any given day can range from “Wow! These are great” to “Sheesh, who is cooking now?” It is frustrating to order something that tasted great on one day and have it be subpar the next. This happened regularly with the Mango Ceviche tostada, which was great on a good day, and a very refreshing choice. Forget their enchiladas. A pile on of cheese without enough seasoned sauce on them. Their beans are done well, as are the refried beans. Forget their rice, which is super bland. Their barbacoa tacos are very, very Good, the meat in them not dripping in fat like most other places, presented with fresh onions and cilantro. Their desserts (tres leches cake and pies are “meh”. The atmosphere is robust because it is generally very full, with seating for about 75 people in the main dining room and 75 more in an adjoining dining room. They have a lively jukebox which customers love to play favorites on, and a couple of large flat screen TV’s for sports viewing. It is a popular place because there are no other choices…The menu is mostly Mexican but there are American choices for Breakfast, lunch and dinner such as pancakes and waffles for breakfast, burgers or fried chicken tenders for lunch, or fried fish platter and steak for dinner. The steak here is inedible, super gristley tough. French fries are mostly the weird coated frozen kind, but on other days are the shoestring kind and taste better. I like their potato and egg taco or the chorizo and egg taco for breakfast. But mostly, I am regularly disappointed. The waitstaff in amazing. The owner houses many of them on his property in individual mini house trailers, which I find Interesting and disconcerting at the same time! No matter what happens with the food served, I always leave good tips for these...
