Mi familia tenía muchas ganas de venir aquí, así que mi pareja y yo (de visita desde Estados Unidos) los trajimos. Lamentablemente, nuestra experiencia la noche del 17 de octubre fue muy incómoda desde el principio. Nuestro mesero no dejaba de mirarnos fijamente y en un momento se paró justo detrás de mi tío observándolo, lo cual fue extraño e inquietante.

Al terminar la comida y pedir la cuenta (mi novio iba a pagar), el mesero exigió una propina en lugar de pedirla amablemente. Insistió en que solo podíamos dejar un 25% o más. Para ser justa, le pregunté si realmente era obligatorio y dijo que sí lo cual fue deshonesto, ya que la cajera después nos aclaró que la propina no es obligatoria.

Mientras pagábamos, el mesero se quedó encima de nosotros, intentando presionar a mi pareja que no habla español. Para evitar una estafa, cerré la cuenta sin dejar el 25%. Pero después nos siguió hasta la mesa y le exigió propina a mi tía. Ella, por ser amable y nada confrontativa, sacó un billete que él arrebató de inmediato antes de ir corriendo a dividirlo con un compañero.

El problema nunca fue el dinero, hubiéramos dejado una buena propina incluso con un servicio regular sino la deshonestidad y el acoso, que hicieron que toda la experiencia fuera desagradable. Reportamos la situación al personal en la caja, y ellos confirmaron que la propina no es obligatoria.

My family really wanted to come here, so my partner and I (visiting from the US) brought them. Unfortunately, our experience on the evening of October 17th was very uncomfortable from the beginning. Our server kept staring at us, and at one point stood directly behind my uncle just watching him, which felt bizarre and unsettling.

When we finished our meal and asked for the check (my boyfriend was paying), the server demanded a tip rather than politely asking. He insisted that we could only tip 25% or higher. Wanting to be fair, I asked to confirm if that was actually required, and he said yes which was dishonest, since the cashier later clarified that tipping is not mandatory.

As we paid, the server hovered right over us, clearly trying to pressure my non-Spanish-speaking partner. To avoid being scammed, I closed the bill without the 25% tip. But then he followed us back to our table and demanded a tip from my aunt instead. Being kind and non-confrontational, she pulled out a bill, which he immediately snatched before rushing to split with a coworker.

The issue was never the money, we would have gladly tipped generously even with mediocre service but the dishonesty and harassment made the entire experience upsetting. We reported the situation to the front desk, and they confirmed tipping is not mandatory.

UPDATE: This is an update to an earlier review. The hostesses are much friendlier and we felt like valuable clients. The food was hot, fresh, and delicious. This has been our “go-to” restaurant when entertaining friends traveling to Veracruz.

Good food, good service, clean bathrooms, and friendly staff make this our favorite.

My favorite dish is an emptied pineapple filled with seafood and smothered in cheese.

OLD REVIEW We frequently visit this area of Veracruz and enjoy eating at El Jaibon. The food has always been delicious and the servers are typically very attentive. The only negative is that the hostess(es) are unfriendly and treat you like they could care less that you are visiting their business. By the way, they have a weekly buffet with a fantastic selection...

No perdería el tiempo en ir a este restaurante habiendo muchos mejores. La comida es regular. Los platillos caros, y el servicio es pésimo. El mesero nada atento. Llega deja las cosas, se da la vuelta y sale corriendo, de tal forma que no da oportunidad a pedirle nada. Se daba una vuelta a la mesa si acaso cada hora. Mucho tiempo para poder ordenar, mucho tiempo con platos sucios. Mucho tiempo para poder pedir cada tiempo. Le pedimos a otro mesero una entrada porque el nuestro no aparecía y luego de 1 hora de espera, al preguntar al mesero por la orden, dice que el platillo no está disponible y que su compañero no le dijo a él ni a nosotros. Estuvimos esperando más de una hora por un platillo que ni siquiera se preparo para que al final nos dijeran que no habia (camarones para pelar). Fuimos a celebrar un cumpleaños y al preguntar al mesero si podían darle un pastel con una velita comento que no hacían nada especial por cumpleaños, si acaso podía ordenar un helado, pero sin velita, y que su capitán no estaba, entonces ni siquiera había alguien en el restaurante a quien hacerle comentarios.
