Café Anno 1890 — Restaurant in Amsterdam

I called ahead to reserve a table for one, on a not-too-busy Friday evening. I walked over, and arrived to find the restaurant busy, but far from overwhelmed. Still, it took several minutes for someone to notice me, and then find me a table, though several were available. I waited at my table for about 5 minutes before my drink order was taken, and only a few minutes later I received the pint of Amstel that I had ordered.

That was the last interaction I had with the staff. I browsed the menus and beer list for a while, translating descriptions manually (as no English menu is available, but we're in NL so whatever), waiting for someone to ask what I wanted to eat, or if I wanted another beer. After awhile I stopped browsing the menu, and did my best to make sure the wait staff could see my empty glass and empty table. After 45 minutes, my table had not been set with silverware, my beer glass was very empty, and I had not been approached (or acknowledged) by the wait staff. So I put €5 on the table and walked out.

We entered 1890 today me (from Amsterdam) and my family in law (from Suriname), my daughter and my girlfriend, where we saw 4 older guys playing a game. I walked after the blond woman who works there and about 5 meters behind me where my parents in law and my girlfriend. One of the guys said: " are you lost?"..... My girlfriend called me as I was to far to hear this (so was the woman who works there) and told me what happened. I went to the guys and asked him what was wrong and why he insulted my family. He replied laughing that he never said anything......I became angry, as he gave his friends the look en continued laughing. The waitress came to us as she heard us arguing and started to say that this man did not say anything...... I rest my case... This lady was walking in front of me so she could not hear anything at all. Too bad that racism exists within this restaurant... especially because I grew up in this area and have had dinner there a lot of times...

If I could leave zero stars I gladly would. This place has a nice decor, however the disgusting bar staff ruin the entire vibe. The women serving us were rude from the beginning (no doubt because we "were not dutch" enough for their liking). However, this all pales in comparison to how atrocious the bald male behind the bar was. He ended up screaming in a group of girls faces, squaring up to them, wanting to fight, intimidating them and making them feel incredibly uncomfortable, for no obvious reason, perhaps again only that we were not dutch, which he did not seem to like. This bar is an absolute DISGRACE to horeca, and I will NEVER visit it again. I'm absolutely disgusted at how they treated us.
